What is the purpose of a Neutral position in a Transfer Case?

I'm aware that the neutral position disengages the transfer case gears, but my question is why/when would anybody ever need to do that? It seems to me that if you want to disengage your gears, you should put your transmission in neutral - not the transfer case.

Neutral in Transfer Case will break the connection between axles, which is good for flat towing.

 With a floor shift you have to get into 4WD before you can moved the shifter to neutral so the front and rear drivelines are locked in 4WD. Even with the dash vacuum it is designed to put it in 4WD when you pull the high/lo shifter. But it easy to pass by that. Just moving the shifter with the engine off will keep it in 2WD. With the floor shifter a twin stick allows you to just put it in neutral or removeing the shift guide does too but these require mods from stock.

For search-engine support, I am adding the text version of JohnnyC's picture.

Operating the four-wheel drive system

THE FOUR TRANSFER FUNCTIONS - WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR

HIGH RANGE, 2-WHEEL DRIVE (H2). Use this for normal driving on dry hard surfaced roads. This position gives greater economy, quietest ride, and least wear.

HIGH RANGE, 4-WHEEL DRIVE (H4). Use this for normal driving on wet, icy, or snow-covered roads. This position provides greater traction than two-wheel drive. The free wheeling hubs must be set at "LOCK".

NEUTRAL (N) Use this position only for operating a winch or other optional equipment. The Land Cruiser must be stopped.

LOW RANGE, 4-WHEEL DRIVE (L4). Use this for maximum power and traction. Top speed is limited to 65 km/h (40 mph). Use "L4" for climbing or descending steep hills, off-road driving, and hard pulling in sand, mud, or deep snow. The free-wheeling hubs must be set at "LOCK".

Sorry for a question aside, but where did you get your manual from? I have bought mine without an Owners Manual, but would of love to have one (if it's not expensive), may be even PDF.
