I am looking for some help with a transfercase question. My plan is to put a turbo-1HZ, H55 with FJ62 (4.10)axels into a FJ60. I had to replace the aluminum housing on the transfer case that was mated to the original H55. The repalcemet housing and transfercase came from a US spec. 86 FJ60. Now I have two different sets of transfercase gears. The original gear set low range has a 1.99/1 ratio and the FJ60 gear set has a 2.3/1 ratio.

My question is : Is there any downside in going with the 2.3 ratio? Why did Toyota choose the 1.99 ratio for the 1HZ motor?

I cannot think of a reason for not using the lower ratio gearset. But I thought I'd post on mud to see if I was missing something.

I plan on using the completed vehical as an "expedition" vehical. Mostly offroad camping trips with a lot of highway miles in between.

Thank you for your input.

i have run the 2.3 for years behind the H55F... very nice for low range and does not affect the high range since H is still 1-1...
go for it...
was the case you replaced on the H55F fitted with the 5th gear oiler?

Wayne,

I am not aware of the 5th gear oiler. Can you please explain. The only thing I did was plug the "extra" bolt hole used on the h42 transfer case.

Thanks

Frank

Found the answer on the 5th gear oiler. I did not know that is what it is called. That piece is in 4 speed transfercases as well so I did not think it was 5th gear specific.

But yes the 5th gear oiler was there.

Are there any other "snags" I should be aware of?

Thanks

Frank

Actually they were both lever action transfer cases. Finishied putting it all together tonight. Now I'm off to assemble the 1HZ. This is my first diesel engine. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the help on the transfercase.

I cannot wait to hear the pur of the 1HZ and the whirl of the turbo. I'll keep working on the truck but I have a long way to go.

did you plug the hole in the four speed transfer case just below the output shaft? 1/4 npt hex plug works well. if not the two cases will be sharing the same oil. not good as the transfer case will push oil into the tranny.

My question is : Is there any downside in going with the 2.3 ratio? Why did Toyota choose the 1.99 ratio for the 1HZ motor?

Hi Frank .What makes you think the 1HZ dont have a 2.3 ratio?
I thought everything after 85/86 except the 13BT got the 2.3 t/case.

What part would you check? I have a dismantled 1HZ t/case in my shed.
Im pretty sure this one is the same as my 88 FJ73

right off the ENS toyota spec sheet:
transfer 2 speed 1.963:1 and 1.000:1

cheers
