Transfer case input gear. Seal runner or no seal runner? (1 Viewer)

W/ seal runner on 85-later. I'm not positive that all 81-84 are same style, but I've rebuilt several 85-90 t-cases in the last few months an all had the integrated seal surface on input gear.
Good info. Thanks. I've read that 85 was a transition year. Is that true? Just want to make sure all 85 build dates are the same. I may have to tear it open before purchase just to make sure but I really don't want to do that.

I can't think of a pre 85 split case I've been in either. 85 is definitely a transition year.

Without that seal runner, how would the transfer case be sealed against the transmission? I'd imagine that without the seal runner there, there's no need for a transfer case input seal, but Toyota does specify one for the pre 85 cases:

90311-48002 (08/1980 - 09/1982)
90311-48007 (10/1982 - 10/1984)

EDIT:
Looking through the parts diagrams, it looks like there is some sort of sleeve that goes in front of the transfer input gear. The transfer input gear looks different in the photos between early and late. That's the thing I learned today, the transfer input gear is different between pre and post 85 transfer cases.

Unfortunately Cim, you're going to have to open your split case up to figure out which input gear you have.

I was afraid you were going to tell me to open it up. Do you know where I can get the digital copy of a service manual? Don't have one for a 60 and using phone at the moment.

Yes sir, they're out there somewhere. Send me a PM (or conversation or whatever) with your email and I'll just share my copy with you through my Dropbox account.

So my plan is to open up the case on Monday and order the gears once I confirm which input gear I have. I have to go to DC next Wednesday for work so timing seems perfect to have the truck unusable while I collect all my parts to rebuild it. The wife and one of her friends are taking the truck out of town this weekend so hopefully it comes back in one piece. She has only driven it once.

Too FuNnIe....

As I noted earlier the early cases had a spacer with a lock ball that the seal would do its sealing against.

You did not explain the concept with enough detail to convey the difference in input gear styles. Besides, there is no "lock ball" in the diagrams posted above.

Here are some pics from the 8/1980 FSM that show the Ball and Spacer.

I'll make sure I get some live action shots when I tear into on Monday.

Brought my homework with me to work. My 80/60/Cummins repair manual is officially needing a 6" binder now.
