I'm trying to identify the year of my transfer case. I know it is not the original transfer case. The case is cracked and I am intending on replacing it with one from a 1979 FJ40.
I'm trying to make sure I can just switch everything over to the 1979 case, and trying to determine which rebuild kit I would need, if it will indeed work. Thanks

The early 70's cases will be 3spd cases and the late 70's may be a 4spd case which use different inputs and maybe different idler size IIRC. There is an input gear that allows you to run the 4spd case behind the 3spd trans. As far as mix and match the best bet is to contact Georg at Cruiser Brothers

looking at the 4wd shift fork being shaved that indicates a larger flange which would mean the later 70's aka 4spd case IMO

Your transmission looks to be a 4sp(?), so the answer is yes, you should be able to swap the 79 tcase over.

Difference is up to 4/75 the high range gears including the input and idler gears are narrower. Both still had the 1.99:1 low range not the 2.31:1 in the three speed cases. Later cases had improments to strengthen them.

The t-case tech article linked by Pighead in post 11 of this thread may contain additional useful info...

So as long as he got the input gear and any spacers with the 79 tcase, he should be good to go?

Yes it will work. Wider gears generally run quieter. Strength shouldn't be an issue behind a stock 2F. Even behind damage from bearing failure and cracked cases are more common the gears failing without something causing it.

After cracking one case, are you going to add reinforcement to the new one?

I assume Georg ( @orangefj45 ) still offers t-case savers and nose cone rings like this...

Good question. I don't plan on wheeling it very hard, so no I won't be.

And... I'm pretty sure the t-case saver and nose rings wouldn't have helped me in this situation. Here's pictures of the evidence. I know what happened, can anyone else figure it out? Here's a hint, it's a bit embarrassing.

That's not a jack point for jacking up your rig :p

Broken bolt or loose stud got squeezed between the case and idler gear?
