During my parking brake rebuild, I took the transfer case cover "No 2" off to reseal it. I noticed the staked nut on the output shaft is loose. I can move the nut back and forth with only the staked part keeping it from turning. I've read the torque setting is 90ft/lb. I can't feel any significant for/aft movement in the shaft. Should I re-torque it or leave it as is?

I would for sure re-torque it. Keeps all the preload and everything in spec. Worst case scenario is it messes something up and you can loosen it up again. But that is hard to imagine.

The nut needs to be tight. Id locktite and stake it. You may currently hear play it in the driveline when your are on and off the gas. Sounds like a clunk or slap.

What's interesting is that it would become loose and still be staked. Doesnt appear to have slipped. But makes me think something has slipped between the nut and the trans.

Doesn't look well-staked. Perhaps the gears, bearing, spacers were not fully bottomed out before staking and they moved forward a little bit.

Get a new nut, or at least remove that one to clear (grind or file) the staked area, so you get an accurate torque on the nut.
