tranny/overdrive???????

good ay from Australia.
i have a hj61 with an automatic tranny i am just wondering how the overdrive works, how do you engage it, also what is the best way to drive these transitions.

i not 100% sure if this is how it works,
but it is my understanding that 4th gear(D) is an overdrive gear(less then a 1:1 ratio)

something happens with the torque converter when you reach a certain speed( lock-up)

so it works 'automatically', so overdrive engage when the tranny shifts into 4th gear and locks-up the torque converter.

sometimes what i do since my truck is so slow, i accelerate in 3rd gear and shift the transmission into (D) when i reach a fast enuf cruising speed
