I have a pretty big question here, I've been reading threads and pages all day. So I know that the 3B came with 4 and 5 speed trannys, they shared the same bolt pattern as the F, 2F &3F, just the input shafts where different. I also read that the 1HZ diesel first came with the H55F 5 speed tranny. Now the reason I've been reading all of this, is to see if I could swap in the input shaft from a H55F tranny into my H42. So is it possible to swap in a different input shaft into my 4 speed and bolt it onto the 1HZ?

One last quesion, Is the 1HZ still in production?

If you need an H42 with a regular F/2F input shaft, I have several of different vintages you can have for little money.

The H55f input shaft is totally different than the H42 input shaft wrt to tooth count etc... so, no it won't go into an H42.

Message me if you want one, though I'm sure there are lots in Vancouver for next to no $$.

I may be wrong but I think the 1HZ used the later production H55 which has a different input bearing outside diameter. If that is the case, the answer is probably no.

If it's a different bearing size, then I could get one from BC bearing. The reason I ask, is that I saw someone selling a F/H input shaft for a H55F. Any idea if you can get a aftermarket input shaft that goes into the H42? Also anybody have the specs for the H55F tranny?

You MAY get the bearing but usually places like B.C. Bearing are not permitted to sell automotive bearings. The bearing you'd get from B.C. Bearing would NOT have the snap ring or the groove for it to hold it in place. Way easier in Central America, there I got all the bearings for the H41 (about 6 in total, 4 shaft bearings and 2 needle bearings) in the FJ45LV for about $100 direct from Koyo!

Just to clarify, you're looking for an input shaft for an H42 that mates to a 1HZ engine?

Are you sure, I've seen people buy wheel bearings from there.

Yes I am.

to be blunt

any US transmission with a 3.55:1 first gear CAN NEVER ACCEPT A 4.8:1 first gear input.

a H42 by definition has 3.55:1

H41 (1981+) and H55's have 4.8:1 first gears.

---------------------------------------------

HZ is still in production

-------------------------------------------

a 1986-1999 4.8:1 transmission can accept all sorts of correct inputs for B, HZ, and F-2H engines...

Ok so if I get a H41 tranny I can swap in a H55F input shaft into it and bolt it upto a 1HZ??

The reason I'm asking all these questions is that I was gonna put a 12H-T engine into my FJ40, but I'm seconding guessing it now since it's been out of production for 16 years. A 1HZ would be a better choice, since it's still being produced.

As rick_d says, you WILL need a POST '86 tranny to mate to the 1HZ. Those are rare in North America.

As for the bearings, you can try but tranny bearings are special with the snap ring grooves. I've tried and the answer in Canada has always been "That's a dealer item, sorry." I have bought knuckle bearings as well as the 3 speed transfer to 4 speed tranny bearing from them but NEVER the special ones.

My recommendation is buy the engine c/w tranny.

bc cruiser-

the only north american, split case type H41's I have ever seen, smelled, touched, etc were from 1985+-1989 BJ75 mine trucks. Do you have some line on them?, because I'll bet 99 44/100% of them are buried deep in a hole somewhere in canada.
...and find the thread where I breakdown what month production will fit an HZ input, it's NOT 1985 and most of 1986 production....therefore you will have to find a 1987-1989 BJ75 mine truck donor to get the H41!

get the 5 speed

1) buy HZ input shaft
2) buy -60450 5 speed "H55" transmission new from cheapest stateside dealer you can find to ship.
3) install #1 into #2 (or get dealer to do it, Cabe in Long Beach charged 1hr @ $70)

...J40, what year? do you have a t-case to work with it? etc.

I think a 12H-T would be an easier fit into a 40 series than a left hand drive HZ conversion. I know the later has been done, but I had issues fitting the same style block (the turbo HD-T) into a 1966 40 (really 45) frame.

The reason I started this thread was to see if I could some how mate a H41 or H42 to a 1HZ. Reason 1 was that the 1HZ is still in producton, reason 2 is that a wanna run a dual t-case setup, and the H41 or H42 would bolt up to the marlin toybox. I was at first gonna put in a 12H-T, which would bolt right up to my H42, but since its been out of producton for 16 years it wouldn't be the best choice. So I think the 1HZ or the 1HD-T are my best choice. Oh yeah I know that theres lots of landcruisers bured up north, to expensive for the company to fly them out so they bury them up there.
