I have parked my 4runner for daily driving, rocking a Jetta again and have quickly discovered how much a home owner needs a pickup, plans were to keep the 4runner and use it for fun but after hauling a bunch of crap home from rona and ikea - I think a truck is in order I was thinking about an early 80's Toy solid axle 22re 5 speed, but haven't found a good candidate yet , but found a 96 T100 and was thinking it may be a good all around toy/crap hauler .

It seams to me to have the same motor and transmission the later 4runners had or am i missing somthing ?

I did a custom bumper for one, those trucks were built for Toyota by I think Hino, they are very heavy duty and well built. They have a very high payload, I think the rear ends are 1 ton.
The guy that owns it swears by it.

they are just a regular third gen pick up that just wider. nothing special like higher payload, t ton diff or hino. LOL

Personally, I would get the T101:

"The T100 was manufactured and partially engineered by*Toyota-subsidiary*Hino. Three trim lines were offered: the base model, the*DX, and the top-of-the-line*SR5. The maximum towing capacity was 5,200*lb (2,360*kg) and the truck had a payload limit of 2,450 pounds. Although most trucks fell within the 1/2 ton realm, a 1 ton model was offered (in 2 wheel drive form) for several of its earlier years until finally being dropped because of a lack of interest."

From wikipedia, helps if you read ;)

I remember them being marketed with a 1 ton option.

The wiki article includes, "Although most trucks fell within the 1/2 ton realm, a 1 ton model was offered (in 2 wheel drive form) for several of its earlier years until finally being dropped because of a lack of interest."

LOMAO. i guess i should read instead of just looing at pic.

anyway back when these things were marketed, i was a die hard toy fan i though i would have seen something like this. as wussypup mentioned, maybe they did offer it or maybe it was on the order list but the number sold was probably very minimal. i would guess these 1 ton 2wd models were aimed towards the motorhome builders just like the older model dually toy trucks. again i didnt read just guessing. LOL.

regarding the original question, the T100 rigs that are in the market are pretty much a wider pickup and share the same drive train components. if you desire more room, then it might be something to look at otherwise not much special about them.

I love the T100. Yes they were a little "over marketed" and I wouldn't consider them a one ton by any stretch of the imagination.

If I remember correctly they started in 93. The 93-early 95's had the 3.0L V6 (3VZE) and i wouldn't touch one of those. Don't get me wrong, I had a 3VZE that lasted 345000 kms and never burnt oil but they eat head gaskets and are far inferior to their replacement the 5VZE. Late 95's to 97 were the best years (again going from memory). They had the 3.4 (5vze) which is a great motor. Heaps of power, more efficient and no head gasket problems. The interior was also updated and an Xtra cab was available. They use the minitruck front end suspension parts ie, torsion bars and a proper steering box. Not the Tacoma rack and pinion steering and coil over shock thingies.

Hope some of this info is accurate and helpful.

I had a 93 when it was 5 years old, and kept it for 8 years. Great truck. Best long distant ride. It had a bench seat with more headroom and legroom than most reg cabs have. It fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood between the wheel wells.

Toyota replaced my head gasket on recall. But I never had an issue with my v6. It was a 2wd truck. I only wanted more power on the hwy for passing. I also did not have A/C and really wanted that for city driving. I don't like having windows open in stop and go city driving. Too Noisy.

One with a 3.4 would make a great truck.
