I (maybe stupidly) ordered the Remote Start with my vehicle (it was installed at the time of sale by the dealership). I swear they made a mistake because whenever I unlock the doors (either by the handle or the remote) the car shuts itself off.

Um...I've owned many aftermarket remote start systems, including the top-of-the-line Clifford 50.5x, and NONE of them have ever done this.

I searched online and this is a clear issue with the factory remote start...not a dealer install mistake. What's the point in remote starting the car just to have to start it again once you get in it? Talk about unnecessary starter wear, especially when I'm used to remote starting my vehicle every single time.

Anyone else here have the factory remote start? Is there any bypass known to man? This sucks. ~$500 for a P.O.S. remote start that has no purpose.

Sorry I can't help you. Never had a remote start, and never wanted one. When they offered it at the dealer I said no, spent enough on the car, and kinda got insulted about an additional $500.

That is a safety issue so nobody can run away with the vehicle. Annoying yes...needed yes...

My 07 Yukon has a remote start and if you get in the truck and press on he brake pedal without the keys in the ignition it shuts off.

Same ideas...different methods. The different methods because no key is needed to actually insert for starting the LC.

It's not needed. Aftermarket systems, such as the Clifford 50.5x, work with SmartKey systems and do not turn off the engine when the doors are unlocked. The user simply unlocks the vehicle via remote (not by the door proximity) and drives away. If the door were to be opened via the remote and the remote not within proximity to the SmartKey system when the brake pedal is pressed, the engine would cut.

This is bad R&D...no excuse. Other top manufactures have worked around this, but not Toyota.

In fact, the remote start instructions even warn agaisnt using the device due to excessive starter wear. What a joke!

EDIT: Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but I have a very low tolerance for companies who fail with a particular item and then claim that there is no way around it, when obviously other companies are doing it just fine.

I agree completly with what you say. I was just trying to get to maybe WHY they did it that way, NOT that I agree with it :o

Hi JBHorne,

Were you able to find a solution to this issue?
I have had the same remote and problem and thought something was wrong with it, never used it, you are absolutely correct, what a waste of money.
MD.

Nope! Its been over two years now so maybe someone has a solution out there.

I just stopped using it. It was embarrassing!

I was about to start a thread on this because (as I just discovered) my 2013 came with the remote starter pre-installed.

Guess what? They still haven't fixed this bug!

If anyone has found a solution, please let me know. So far, I've only used it to show my kids my Jedi powers:poof:but will never use it again due to the fact it's a P.O.S. system that requires the truck to be restarted after getting in!!!

I don't use it for the same reason, it's worthless, and the controler doesn't even always work right away to get it started... They could have easily done like stated above and had the truck stay running so long as the key was on the driver getting in....

I can look out the window, remote start, watch an a quarter inch of ice melt, and then go my merry way. I will restart it, thank you very much, and be happy for the feature.

That works in your climate, but here? Waste of money. On hot days I'd like to start it remotely to get the A/C going, but that benefit is outweighed by the stress put on the starter motor, IMO.

I hear what your saying, and I could see how it does work well for that, but guess we just are wondering why not just keep it running when ya get in... that's all... all of this being said, I proly will use it this winter:D

quick qustion for ya because this will be my first winter with the remote start option, can you leave the mirror defrost option on at night so when you turn on the rig remote start it will defrost them?

My suspicion, as was suggested, is that it is liability related. A fact of life. And overlooked in all this is the ability to remote start and see if the rig has been booby trapped. Not all inclusive but handy just the same. I would go along with the motor continuing to run if the smart key were in proximity when the door was opened. Perhaps a dealer setting. The rear view camera warning bugs me more. Nevertheless, this glass is way more than half full.

Ciao

Good question about the settings. I don't know the answer. I do think that it uses the settings as you left it when you remote start. I would have voted for a bit more intelligence. If below some temp--do this. If above do this. Defrost of the windscreen is a similar issue.

Hate to say say it but Range Rover has the best remote start options available plus an iPhone and droid app that offers great options plus a runtime countdown.

I'm in Boston. It's wonderful to have a warm vehicle to climb into with wife n young ones. The benefits outweigh the minor drawback of re-starting every time.

^^ as aMir904 said, the remote starter is a blessing. We start the vehicle with AC, at flaming 45C+, and wait a few mins before walking up to it. Remote range is also good. the vehicle also self shuts off after 10mins or so i think, so good to warm it up at early mornings, while you do your last min chores..

I don't think anyone is arguing that a remote starter is a dumb idea. The OP was making the point, in 2008, that there were systems on the market that figured out the shut-off bug while ensuring safety. My point was that 5 years later Toyota could have fixed this bug on their flagship vehicle.

Imagine someone posted that they wished a $70K+ LC had automatic windows instead of hand cranked windows. Would you reply by pointing out that it's awesome to be able to open windows?
