Never tried them but I have seen other discussions on these on MUD with a search

M55's

I like 'em, but I wouldn't say I love 'em. They're heavy and a bit loud for an AT. But they seem bullet proof and mine have hardly any wear after 30,000km. On a side note - I like the fact they look like work tires - no bold graphics, etc.

My biggest problem with them: I bought them to stud them, but they showed up without the holes. I thought, "okay I'll get them drilled and studded". Problem is, no tire shops within 500 miles do that anymore. Without studs, they are mediocre at best on ice. So here comes winter and I'm left with either buying winter tires, siping, or studding (myself) the M55's.

10 ply even with very low air pressure will ride hard... your tires are like a big balloon... a 35" 2 ply side wall will ride much nicer than a 35" 10 ply side... picture steel sidewalls with no flex...

that being said i have a set of 10 ply waiting for my FJ75 when it arrives...

The Toyo m55 are a good all round tire. Used a lot by industry on the work pickups. Used to see them on most of the logging company trucks on the north island. Yes they do have a noticeable hum on the highway, but not bad.

BTW, they are 10 ply rated, they do not have ten plys (ie that's a load rating left over from the days of bias plys). I believe at most the sidewalls are three ply. They are built more robust then the lower load range radials though.

roscoFJ73, i did a mud search and there is tons of positive stuff on the toyo m55, however i got so excited about these new tires that i'm getting, i decided to start a new thread .... :o :D

my tire requirements are,

good quality build
long life
puncture resistant
good off road
good on road
33"

wayne, good point on the airing down.

thanks for the feed back guys

Yes ,I saw mainly positive comments ,except on the noise level. But good offroad tyres dont come with a "quiet" option.
In one of the posts,it said they are a true 33;)

I got 10 ply 235 x 85 x 16 on my 75. If I let them down to 20 psi ,they belly out just like my BFG kato's
I have no problems on the beach with them
On the subject of tyre ply, manufacturers dont all make the same thickness ply .,so some 10 ply can be thicker/thinner

As others have mentioned, these tires have a great rep as a workhorse for the back country work truck. Good reports in sharp rock and shale. They are loud, and my understanding that is due to the straight cut side lugs, instead of alternating. Petra had a set of 255/85R16s on her HJ61 and they liked to follow the road crown. I switched out to some 255/85R16 Cooper sst's and that went away. The Toyo"s currently reside on the FZJ80 as the daily driver tires and no complaints (other then they look a little small with a 4" lift).

I figure if you are going to run the one set, and want industrial and common market then these are good a choice. If you need the traction in mud or snow (they are a mild all terrain) then get chains. Ya"ll would be the best of all worlds then, as a general statement.

I have M55's in the 235/85 r16 size on my 60.

They are tough, and on a heavy rig seem fine at 18 psi. I like em. No noticeable noise on the highway for me..

They look a bit like my Nexus 235/85/16.

Is that your rig Darryl, nice roof rack?;)

here is a pic of my rig just last month

I have Toyo m55's mounted on split rims and love them...i live in ny and my rig is a DD. I am very happy with the snow and ice capabilities of these tires.

I do get a bit of road noise...but...they do have over 35,000 miles on them...nothing compared to BFG's though.

They dont have actual holes for the studs but...they have a spot to put them...a place by me can drill and put them in...depends on the area/location/quality of the place doing them.

you bet. I like the roof rack too. Just not loaded with 18 psi tires in Moab....waay to swayie.

My next set will be M55's again, just the 255 size for fun. The 235 although looks absolutely fine on a cruiser and gives it decent height. I have had no issues on the trails I run....which hasn't been much lately :(

can you re-tread these tires? i know with alot of the higher ply industrial tires they can be re-treaded like what semi trucks do...but what about these?

I would think so. Last time I priced a re-tread on this size it was $140 bucks a tire. The M55s go for about $220. So it would save a bit. But I might be inclined to buy new.
