Towing a 2000lb teardrop (1 Viewer)

My hiker trailer (boxy teardrop) was only around 800 pounds and I now have an A-liner that is closer to 1200 pounds. Oddly, the A liner tows better, indicating aerodynamics may play a bigger role than weight on the highway.

I have a 35" spare under the truck and looking for a different hitch setup. Glad to see your 4 bolt thingymabob held up. I'll probably go that route in the short term and weld in something custom in the long term.
The OEM hitch along with the spare tire mod kit (Witts end I think) let's you fit a 35" spare in the factory location. It's real tight but seems to work (315 1/2 worn bfg AT under mine and barely clears the rod that connects the axle to the frame). Have to go with the Toyota one for the additional arch in the design vs the straight style like the Reese I had originally.
 
Yeah, I tried to fit it in there, but it didn't clear the panhard bar. Not sure what brand my receiver was (old and rusty). My tire is also a 35x10.5x16, so a little bigger diameter than a 315.

I got one like this from Cruiser Outfitters last week. Haven't bolted it up yet (need to paint), but eyeballed it and I think everything will fit:

I opted not to add a aftermarket receiver hitch. PO installed a hitch on factory 4 hole location and anyone wondering about doing the same thing it is solid as a rock at this weight range. Picked up the teardrop in Pueblo on Friday drove to Canyonlands needles side on Saturday and back to Bayfield Sunday. View attachment 1948355View attachment 1948356

Awesome teardrop. But get a proper receiver hitch. That is a scary tow setup right now.
 
The 4x4 Labs bumper work really well for towing. It gets your spare out of the way and is solid. I tow a ~4,500lb boat around and am pretty happy.
