Hi All.... I need help, can anyone tell me the torque setting for the lower steering arm studs, the ones that go into the knuckle housing, sorry to have to ask but here in the UK you can't buy a manual for these cars.....regards Mick.

Sorry Mick...can't remember the torque spec and don't have my FSM with me at the moment. However, if you really can't get the FSM in the UK  then the next best thing would be for you to head over to techinfo.toyota.com and download the user manual etc for about $10. Not a bad deal, except for the time it takes to download about 500+ files.

Do a search using Raventai's username and you'll find a discussion on this.

My 97 manual specifies 71 ft-lbf for the two bolts on the upper bearing cap and the four nuts on the knuckle arm.

I've purchased books from the UK and had them delivered to the US. I think the boat goes both ways :).

birfield studs

Just to let you know, the only torx socket I had was 3/8 drive and my torque wrench is 1/2 so done them up bloody tight and just to make sure, locked them in with Loc-tite industrial liquid metal, that should be cured nicely by tomorrow when all the new birfield seals arrive, I have already filled up the diff through the hole where the drive shaft goes through, much easier than on the diff filler hole, it took 3 litres.

I think bloody tight is about right while gorilla tight would be too much. For the lock-tite to properly work you should have cleaned both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. Even if you didn't do that step you should be fine.

You Brits never cease to amaze me. I would think it would be a lot easier to pull the 1 diff filler plug, but whatever floats your dinghy. :D
