How can you tell your torque converter isn't engaging?

Are you referring to converter lock up? While in 3rd (D on shifter) and slowly accelerating, watch the tach for a sudden 200-300 rpm drop...that's lock up.
If you mean just generally not engaging, then watch for sudden rpm increases and the truck doesn't accelerate. Should feel similar to when driving a manual truck and you kept your foot on the gas and partially pushed the clutch in.

On a factory transmission, the converter does not lockup in 3rd. It will only lockup in 4th (OD).

It's real simple to see on a 62 if it's working or not. Just gradually accelerate in OD and let it get into 4th gear. At 51-53 MPH, you should get another "shift" after 4th. The revs will drop 200-300 RPM. This is the converter lockup.

Well when i am driving and I need to punch it to get around someone it feels as though it doesn't accelerate as it should be. My rpms don't rise and its more of a gradual acceleration. Is that more of an intake issue or tranny issue? I can be on the hwy and push my pedal all the way down and sometimes I get nothing and my speed does t really change.

If it doesn't downshift when you floor it, I'd look at the kickdown cable adjustment on the throttle body.

What speed are we talking about? If you're doing about 70-75 MPH, it's probably going to be very hesitant to downshift, as that would put it pretty close to redline.

If it's doing this at lower speeds, I'd suspect an improperly adjusted kickdown/TV cable.

What would be a properly adjusted kick down cable?

The kick down cable controls the transmission...it shifts the transmission down to the next lower gear so that you have more power to pass / accelerate. Its sounds like the OP is talking about the downshift aspect rather than the torque converter.

Need to follow the instructions on how to adjust the kick down cable or that's what it sounds like.

I know about the two cables. One from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body and one from the throttle body to the tranny. I have adjusted and re-adjusted those but I guess I don't know what's a proper adjustment. Tight no slack, little slack,etc.....

Search this section or the FSM for the procedure.
