OK,

I have been casually looking for an 80 series for the past little while.
Yesterday I looked at a 1/1994 FJZ80 with 174k on it, and no lockers.
It's a 1 owner truck from california. It has all dealership service records.
The truck shifts very smoothly. It's very clean, and very straight. Totally stock truck. It even has the toyota tool kit in the back.
Carfax shows that the truck is fine, and qualifies for their buyback guarantee. Thre is a little bit of rust on the front lip of the hood, but nothing major.
The guy is asking $8500 but will take $8000.

I drove it last night. There is NO clicking from the front end. The brakes are good. The tranny shifts great. No clunks. The on;y thing of concern is that the oil pressure needle is pegged right at the high mark. (the top edge of the needle is on the bottom of the 'H' mark.

I;'d have a toyota master tech check it out but he's out of town for the week....

Anyhow, does this truck sound too good to be true, is it's price out of line?
Thanks!

Definitely not

One other thing.
NADA value for this vehicle is $9300... He's asking 8500, and will take 8000... This seems a little out of sorts to me...

doesn't seem like 8K is an incredible deal.
Watch out for the guides now, though, the prices are freefalling and they can't keep up...

Too much coin for an un-locked vehicle in my opinion.

My oil gage pegs the same way when being driven down road, drops down pretty drastically when at idle. Leaks up front in the timing cover area. Has not been a issue for me.

1. I'd make sure its not full of 90 weight with the needle that high at 174K miles.

2. Throw out the NADA...its always late, too broad of a compilation and only takes into account data submitted by volunteer dealers....way too spotty to be relied on for judging true wholesale value. The defacto standard is the Black Book of Auction Values, available only to dealers.

I'm in the car business and here in Texas, that's a $6000-6500 truck wholesale, max.

Whats retail?

How does the average joe pay wholesale?

Retail is whatever someone will pay. On this type of truck, private seller to private seller, retail is probably $8000 and a fair price is $7000-7500. But most Cruiserheads won't pay that because it doesn't have lockers.

The average Joe has to be diligent and persistent and chisel away and not get emotionally caught up in a piece of iron. In other words, be a tighta$$.

I paid $7900 for my unlocked 147k miles rig. one year ago, so you should get a better deal. If I had to do it over again, I would wait for a locked rig.

pssst.....hold out for lockers......

You'll thank us later :)

Not a screaming deal, but decent ....... hold out for lockers if you think you have the slightest chance of wanting them down the road.

Why don't you take it to Scott and have him check it out? He's a master tech too ya know.

As soon as you buy an 80, I'm going to dig up the 500 emails you've sent out about how they're sissy mall wagons.

Tiger.....dont buy that. get one with lockers...seriously, even if you never touch the little switch it will help if you ever want to sell the truck. You put a halway clean 80series on this forum with lockers and you will have 10 emails in a day or two with serious buyers.

GET LOCKERS....

James,
Offer him 6k for it and tell him you heard gas prices were on the rise agian. I would think you could get it for a lot less than 8k if you pushed. Most "common folk" looking for a landcruiser aren't going to shop for a 94, it's just too old no matter what the milage. I bought my 93 for 5k with lockers and 200K miles(tool kit included) on it two years ago. I knew the guy and he still thought it was worth 10k because the book including the miles was still at 11K. I'd hold out. Plus you've got all the moab repairs on the 40 to spend money on.

cory i'll be doing the same.

James Cory is right. THE Mastertech will only be one until his certs expire. Scott could check it out for you no problem. Catching Will in town with the time to do it will be difficult.

I just love the look of the FJ40, always have and alway will... Maybe I'll cut the 80 body off and mount a 40 tub on top of it... ;)

Reading those e-mails now as a matter of fact.
Might as well dig up the no chevy parts in my toyota... (after the saginaw and SM420 were the best upgrades I've done)
YEah, I am eating humble pie.... :frown:

FWIW I still think they are sissy wagons...

But compared to most everything out there (except the Taco and 4Runner) they are the best for my current needs and desires... I've been stuck one too many times in Danni's minivan. The 40 is fun, but not a real good truck for long trips carrying gear for 2 people... HEck if I am going to pay off a large sum of money, it might as well be for something that carries and is worthy of the name

Land Cruiser...

That or I guess I Am turning into a sissy...

Good luck

This one does have abs and the alarm system (not 100% sure on the rear discs, I would have to check)

FWIW, I messeged the guy that Cory posted to the WCML and I am trhing to find out how much he wants for his 40th anniversary 80 series.
