As expected, the first one is out. More maybe coming, could change at anytime, so before going out, check with the agency for the area to see what is open.

I'm surprised the area West of SR87 is still open.

There are restrictions just about everywhere, they are subject to change at anytime, so be sure to check before leaving. The fire danger is very high, so if going out, be informed and do what you can to prevent.

Driving thru Camp Verde last night there is a sign that said Fossil Creek area closed. The turn off from 260 just past West Clear Creek has the gates closed. I believe Fossil Creek itself is in Coconino National Forest which has a new map of roads that still able to travel when the area is open. Marked or unmarked the roads shown on the map are the only roads you are allowed to be on when a area is open. Right Fossil Creek area is closed.

From the link above - Forest Road 708 will be closed until April 15, 2013 from Strawberry to just east of the Waterfall Trail -----NICE:rolleyes:

I read the the part that says " in effect until August 31, 2012, or until rescinded. " Did not see any other dates. John

Yup, found it right under the sub-heading of fossil creek rd closure. I had heard that it was closed early in the year due to deterioration of the shelf road. Not hard to imagine. Story goes that they are doing repairs so that it will be safe for travel by the posted opening date. Hope so. That area is part of the Payson district, which got a new Ranger not too long ago. I have heard that she is pretty overwhelmed by all the work that needs to be done in her district. TRAL is looking at maybe going up and doing some work up in that area this summer to help out a little. It would be a good excuse to get up in the high country.

FYI

Fire restrictions lifted on Tonto National Forest Wed., July 25

All fireworks prohibited year-round

PHOENIX (July 24, 2011) – All campfire and smoking restrictions affecting the Tonto National Forest are being lifted, effective 8 a.m., Wednesday, July 25.

The fire restrictions, which covered the entire forest, are no longer needed because fire danger has been reduced by increased moisture and humidity from the annual monsoon weather. These conditions prompted officials to lift the forest fire restrictions which have been in place since May 15.

“Although campfires and cooking fires will now be allowed throughout the forest, we ask visitors to remain cautious and properly extinguish their fires. Campfires have to be cold enough to touch before they are left,” said Acting Fire Staff Helen Graham. “Campfires should be put out by drowning with water and stirring the ashes with first a shovel, then bare hands, to ensure the fire is cold -- and dead out.”

Acting Forest Supervisor Clay Templin acknowledged the cooperation of the visiting public during the period of fire restrictions which began two months ago.

“We appreciate the public’s support during these fire restrictions,” Templin said. “We thank everyone for their patience and understanding while access and activities on the Tonto were restricted during this wildfire season. We appreciate our visitors’ patience and support of the restrictions.”
