Hey all,

What was the process for doing this?? How are they holding up?? any helpers, do's and dont's?? Please help!!

Thanks again,

I've had mine painted for a month and Ive been very happy with them. Its really very easy:

1.) Clean Wheels with degreaser
2.) Scuff up with scotchbrite pad
3.) Paint 2 or 3 coats.

The steps I took:

1) Remove wheels
2) Clean with dish soap (degreaser) and a plastic bristle brush
3) Dry with towel, then let air dry for a while
4) Tape off the wheel so you dont get paint on the tire
5) 3-4 LIGHT coats of primer, letting them fully dry before the next coat
6) 3-4 coats of whatever color paint, letting dry between coats

It took me a whole day of on and off work, but Im quite pleased with my results, and so far the only damage to the paint that I recieved was when I had my 305's installed, and that was because the Toyos balance without external weights, so they removed the ones that were there. Easy fix though :)

4dmalamutes thread on this has lots of opinions and options. the soap on the tire was a pretty cool trick that keeps you from having to mask the rubber; paint on and wash off the overspray. there are some good adhesion agents ( bond-aid ) that help prep metal for accepting paint that you use first like a primer.

The local auto refinishing supply store sells "etching" primer for metal-aluminium and this was recommended to me by more than one person.

For me it was:

1 - Find second set of rims that have peeling clear coat and look like crap
2 - Take rims to powder coater for sand blasting and coating
3 - Pick up rims, leave $200 and a cold case
4 - Sell my wheels and recoup all costs

For me it was:

Step1, Search
Step2, follow search results.

Thanks again for the help guys. I appreciate those who took the time to write something helpfull other then search!!

All the best,

Darren, i was just giving you a hard time. but it starts to get old when you explain the same thing 20 times.

I used "bond-aid" first after cleaning the wheels. Then i used dish soap spread onto the tire, but be very careful not to get any on the rim or the paint wont stick. Then i painted the rims black with a semi-gloss rustoleum product that is for auto trim. I used two coats. THen after it had dried i hosed off the soap from the tire and that also rinsed away any overspray.

Hope that helps.

Thanks again.. I appreciate it!! I just picked up a set that I want to paint.. .. and am eager to get into them.. .. .. I'll post some pics when finished.. Later!!
