To Snorkel Or Not To Snorkel?

Seems to be a key detail in these cases of ruined engines from “puddles.” And it makes sense, given the care Toyota put into designing the intake, bumper, and wheel well liner as a system. Change one part of the system and it won’t work as designed.

Not that your point about need or want isn’t valid.. just that we should keep the puddles ruining engines in context.

For sure, I had to cut my wheel liners to fit the Rhino bumper. They're no where near as water tight as stock with the stock bumper etc

Chop the hole!

They are good for deep water or if running behind someone kicking up dust in the desert or dusty trails.

If I was getting one for none water areas. I would get the one that UN put's on their Land Cruiser that tucks up tight against the windshield. I few folks have those on here.

If you're not going to use it I would not get it. Better off upgrading something else.

My first mod was skid plates.
Can you point me the direction of that UN snorkel?

It's made by TJM. Make sure it fits the gas version .. vs a diesel.

Snorkel is so polarizing. IMO, if you really want one, be prepared to marry with the truck for life or expect to get hosed when trading in. ;)
agreed

i want one really bad the one with cyclone

but i care about resale value #1 in my life = thus i live vicariously through other snorkel owners

I got mine with the oem Toyota snorkel my buddy had laying in the garage since 2008 when he was buying the 200 so I was like „I am not letting this thing lay around another decade“… so I mounted it.

I am out of the style category but he was like a half year prior in North Africa with the car and the amount of sand I was vacuuming out of the air filter box gave me extra confidence to install it with some extra amount of window glue to make it also waterproof.

I like the oem mushroom.

Most mods will be a loss when trading or selling. However, not all snorkels are created equal and some are a lot more “look at me!!” than others. Having a snorkel myself, the function outweighs the fashion and trade in value every day.

Agree 100%, but few are so permanent as drilling a hole in your fender. If you have a good use-case for it, definitely go for it, but most people don't ever need one and go with the "look at me I offroad looks", like you said.

This is my concern as to the effectiveness of snorkels:

Agree

If you read through many of the threads and see what people do.. they put the car completely back to stock and sell it as "never been offroaded, owned by my wife to take kis to school"

Given all the mods are easily reversible and the fender mod isn't - makes sense what you are saying

Wife wants me to get one for our 2016 as Texas especially our area has been gettting some odd heavy rainfall where everything floods. So I just might have to listen and get one although I like the look of the windshield color matched one(can’t find it) so tjm seems best option I can find.
