Tires, how big can I go?

Hello all,

I have a lexus 03 LX470 and I will be purchasing the 06-07 stock Graphite Rims. I have decided on the BF Goodrich AT and was wondering if a 285/65/18 tire would fit. If not, what is the largest size? Any advice and pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much,

I have searched 3 forums for the last 4 days leading to no answers. Except for you guys of course!! But yes I have used the search on this forum plenty, finding nothing about anyone running the 285/65/18. I as hoping to find someone that has them and to get advice before the purchase. I have Toyo 285/75/R16 MT's on my 98 LC, they are a little taller and wider than the 285/65/R18 AT's so you should be fine.

I ran the BFG AT's for many years on a couple of different rigs. They are a decent tire for a daily driver, very quite, long life, nice ride. Good traction on wet roads and in snow and ice. Nice handling on gravel and dirt roads.

They are worthless in mud, and chunk pretty bad if you do any real rock crawling though. The sidewalls aren't that tough either.

Just be aware that those BFG ATs only come in a LT E rating-which I think will probably be a rough ride for you.

I don't have much wheel time in sand, but I learned recently that smooth tires perform better in sand than aggressive tires. They don't dig in and bury themselves as bad. I went with the Toyo MT's because we see a lot of snow and mud at certain times of the year. I also like the sidewall rating, side wall punctures are pretty common here.

IMHO you won't find a decent trail tire that rides like the OEM Michelins.

Agreed, but some may find a C or D rated AT tire as a bit nicer all around.

I think though, coming from a 20" low profile rim setup and liking the ride as is the AT's won't bother me. This is my 5th day owning this vehicle and I can't believe how nice it is

It is difficult to find these sizes in a good, strong, trail tire (e.g. BFG AT, Goodyear SlientArmor, etc.) with a C or D load rating, especially in 18 inches. Everything I've ever found that met my criteria for a trail tire in the 18" size, also always had an E load rating.

It is a bit rougher, but I guess it depends on one's tolerance. If one wants the cush ride, keep the highway-type tires. There is no free lunch!

I'm a truck kinda guy, most of my rides have been trucks. I never liked the ride in my 100 until I put the OME mediums and Toyo MT's on it. Now it has a more truck like ride. I like it.

I can see where car people would dislike the stiffer cornering and rougher ride.

I guess it's just about choosing what you need for the type of driving you do and the ride quality you like. And whatever compromises you need to make along the way.
