Tire and rim question here if anyone has some time to answer. IYHO would it be detrimental to go against the tire manufacturer's approved rim width for a specific tire size?

Example 1: I have 265/70/16 ice tires that I would like to mount on 6" wide steel wheels(that I have yet to purchase) for winter. They are currently on 8" wide rims that I don't want to run in the winter. Most manufacturer's approved rim width for this size of tire is 7-9". In my ignorance, I'm not sure if I should mount these tires on 6" rims.

Here is another example if you don't mind. 235/85/16's are all approved by tire manufacturer's to be mounted on 6-7" wide rims. I would like to mount them on 8" wide rims for summer.

Any advice/opinions/help will be appreciated.

the 235's won't work on a 8 inch wide rim. The tires are only 9.5 inches in width. So the sides will be super flat and you might pop a bead off easy.

The 265 might work on the 6 inch rim. But guys who run 255's on the 6 inch rims find a lot of strange wear on the tires. The centre section wears quickly.

Thanks brownbear, considering this I think I'll move up from the 235s to a 285/75/16 for the 8" rim. Hopefully fuel mileage won't be compromised too much being that 285s are 2 inches wider and somewhat heavier.

As for the 265s maybe I can sell them or trade for a set of winter/ice 235s that would fit nicely on a 6" wide rim. Its proving difficult to find a properly backspaced economical 16x7" steel rim for a 70 series.

Take care

if you pm greg_b he has listed 16x7 rims you can use. Part number and all.

I run 16x6 toyota rims. Which guys are saying on here that with 255's they wear funny.
