So i just finished putting in my OME suspension with custome extended shackles. It is sooooo much better. However now I am left with these little tiny tires. I am wondering how big I can go without loosing all drivability as this is my DD. I know some locals running 35's on similar trucks but they never drive the highway. Just wondering some of your opinions. Maybe two sets are better? one just for playing? Also if I go to only one set what kind should they be. I have heard horror stories of guys only getting 20-30K out of mud tires when driving highway. Any thoughts? also have been told toyo open country MT's wear amazing but are they really worth the extra $. I hope I am not asking too much

I would recomend running 2 sets of tires. I run 33" x 9 BFG AT's around the city and highway. They are great on snow and ice as well. They will pay for themselves in fuel savings. I had a set on my written off BJ74 and I had 50K on them and still almost half the tread left. For Offroad I have a set of 33" Swamper TSL's. IMO these are the best offroad tires you can get other then tractor tires, which is what I'm upgrading to, so I'm selling the TSL's. PM me if you are interested.

PS, you might want to think about changing your forum name :) Sorry, couldn't resist.

I run a 255/85/16
Basically a 33x10.5

I love them.
I have some all terrains for the winter, and some BFG MT's for summer.
The MT's are noiser, and bumpier when driving around town (to be expected), but I love it. Its a truck. If I wanted a car, I would get a car.

Gearing is great with the 33s. (I have a 5speed).

Cheers,
N.

Change diffs to 4.56 (or 4.88, but thats maybe to low for the 13B-T) and run 35s on the machine

I had 255-85R16/33s BFGs on my BJ70 (3B-II, 4.11 diffs, DD - worked great) before, but they fitted perfectly with a new (nearly) stock suspension without extended shackles - so they will also look tiny on your 74 imho.
I've heard only good stories about Cooper's Discoverer STT (my next choice in 35").

Umm, correct me if I am wrong, but don't the BJ74's coming out of Japan have a 4.88 in them stock?

EDIT:
Hmm, I just did the math using the calc on this page.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~zerosin/gearcalc.html (find Find RPM calc)

Because I know to go 100kph I am about 2200rpm.
They have to be 4.11's.

Tire: 33
5th: 0.838
Transfer: 1
Diff: 4.11
Final RPM: 2164.8

A 4.88 would mean a RPM of 2570

So they must be 4.11's.

Cheers,
N.

I have a 70 series and run 35 x 13.5 x 15 it has 4.1 diffs I could never be bothered to change wheels all the time. It goes well on the highway and around town, 13bt has enough power to push them most places. Offroading is mainly mud and rivers here not many rocks would probably need lower gears if crawling more.:)

thanks for all the opinions. The choice doesn't seem any easier. I am not going to change the gears anytime soon. Changing tires alll the time seems like a pain in the arse. I am leaning towards 33 1250 15 toyo open country MT's maybe. thanks again

Tires

Interco Tire puts out a tire that I have been meaning to look at, but as usual time has not permitted. I will talk to our companys tire supplier today about it. From what I can tell it is an actual 34" 9.5" tire. It is mainly for duallys but beacuse of BJ74's weight it is applicable. Here is a link. I will get back this afternoon re the tire.

One thing I was suprised with is how quickly weight goes up on larger tires. Check out Procomp tires website. It seem weight goes up like crazy after 31".

I have a friend that runs those tires on his suzuki.
Seem to be a great tire. They are wearing well (on a zuk) and do great offroad. Just make sure you have the HP to keep them clean in mud.
They track okay (on a zuk), but do get flat spots easy from not driving.
Road noise seems not much worse than my BFG MT's.
But he also has a convertable with a mercedes diesel in it.

Cheers,
Nick

Along with the same subject... I have a 3F engine on my 70, and... well... its not the best performing jeep ive driven. I need a tire change so i was looking into the Yokohama Geolander in their AT or MT versions...leaning more towards the MT. But, the MT's only come in 31's and 33's... my question would be... for a 3F engine at 2600 meters above sea level where performance is an issue, how dumb am i to go bigger than the 32x11.5 i have now?

I should note the car is my "DD", i use the term loosely cuz i dont use it every day... maybe 3 times a week. Dont put that many km's on it... Thanks

I have always found Goodyear MTR to be really quite.
No worse for noise than a BFG AT.
Not as aggressive as others, but they good medium.

The interco LTB's are good. as I said above.
But they are an offroad tire, so be prepared to accept the tradeoffs.
Here is a pic. of my buddies zuk. Tis a sweet rig, but its more of a crawler.
Not a mudder. WEH8MUD!

Cheers,
Nick

And that mud is thick.

I had 33s on the 73 series but I swapped them for the 31s on my 75series.
Both trucks are now happier.
I felt the 73 makes a better DD with 31s and the longer wheel base 75 series is more suited to bigger tyres.

The 73 lost some offroadabilty(theres that word again:D) with the 31s but as a DD it can get around corners much faster and its easier to get in and out of.

Ditto .. MTR are off road tires for road use and agressive look .. :D great in rocks but mud are like any other MT less than my favorite MT General Grabber.

LBT on mud are really great ..

Hi, I need someone to please enlighten me on the nomenclature of tire sizing.

Some tires are listed like this

31x10.5x15

and some like this

255x85x16

and some more like this

7.50x16

Does any of the numbers correspond to the width or height of the tire? I do know that the last number corresponds to the rim size.

Many thanks.

The information given on the metric tire sizing in incorect.

255/85-16

255 is the width in millimetres, their are 25.4mm in a inch so it is 10.03 inches wide

85 is the height of the side wall in a percentage of the width, 85% of 255 equals 216.75mm or 8.53 inches.

16 is the rim in inches

To get the overall height of the tire multiple the sidewall by 2 (top and bottom) and add the height of the rim. 8.53 x 2 + 16 = 33.06"

In this case a 255/85-16 is equal to 33 x 10 x 16
