I'm looking at replacing the tires and rims on my truck with something a bit taller and more aggressive. (I like tall and skinny, not short and fat :)) I'll keep the tires I have now for road trips, and becuase their already on rims it will be an easy swap.

The truck gets used mostly for fishing, camping and 4x4ing . Tires need to be good on the road as well as trail. The stores are suggesting either the BFG muds, or the Pro Comp muds. Both around 33/10.5/15 The pro comps are a bit cheaper but are they as good as the BFG's? Any input would help. Thanks

Phil i have a set of 31x10.50 x15 BFG ATs mounted on eight spoke wheels...tire have approx 70% tread wear left...$360.00 for the set of 4

Best Regards

Gord, thanks for the offer on the tires but I have 31" AT's on the truck just now which are ok on dry trails or roads, but they suck in the muck. I was on good logging roads last weekend and I may as well have had slicks on, just sliding around everywhere. Mind you the roads are in thaw just now, but still. So I want to get something a bit taller and better traction in the mud. If it rains all weekend and I'm down a nasty road camping, I want to make sure I can get out without winching. Thanks for the offer but I'll have to pass on them.

Phil, you might want to check out the swamper TSL radial in 32x10.5r15. 21/32" tread depth, no-nonsense/hype tire and genuinly 32.1" tall. It's a radial so no morning flatspots. Spec'd for a 7" rim but will fit 6" without a problem. I ran the taller q78 version of this tread for 2 years and it never left me stranded. Check BFG's and Procomp's spec sheets for actual tire height. Often a 33 is only 32" tall.

I was originally looking at the super swamper narrows, 34/9.5/15 but they didnt have good reviews on the websites I was checking. Great tire off road in the mud, but not so good on the road. They said there was an issue with side wall blowouts, especially with the heavier vehicles. A friend has the boggers on his truck and he said they go like snot through just about anything, but he doesnt use that truck for the street. I've gone with the bfg muds. A bit shorter but a proven good tire in most applications. Not the best in the mud, but they'll be better than the tires I have now. Thanks for the input.

Beware the BFG triguard sidewall v.s. sharp stuff...been there. Sorry to be a downer. Best you're aware.

I've had good successwith BFG At and MT, which also have a tall skinny 255/85/16 I think the size is? Basically a 33/10ish/16. Any tire can get the side wall sliced in the right conditions. For my summer tire I now use the Cooper STT about the size of 33/12ish/16, a little wider than I want but they have held up good so far and cheaper than the Toyo of same, probably similar price as BFG.

Hi All:

I'd vote for a tall n' narrow Super Swamper radial for PNW mud over the BFG MT. In really snotty stuff the BFG MTs pack up just like most tires would.

For sidewall strength, gotta go bias-ply. I've torn-out the sidewall on two BFG MTs, but doubt most any radial tire would have fared any better.

Regards,

Alan

I got much better milage on BFG MT than the similar sized AT. Road noise even on paved surfaces not a problem, but on dirt roads the MT throws up more stones and have chipped the paint on my doors, even though they only show out of the wheel wells during turning

Well I got the new tires on this weekend and quite happy with them so far. I havent given them a proper test yet, but they definitely throw the mud better than the old AT's did. The truck looks way better with the larger tires as well. Anyway, thanks for the input. Always helpful.
