What are "certs" ? and do I need them?

Thanks

I called up Discount and they said they had no problem selling me certs for tires not purchased from them.Of course he tried to sell me on buying from them. I let him price it all out. He was amazed that I found the Coopers for $130, he said that their price was $190. Best he could do was $1058. I think it is a great deal, but all said I can get the same thing he is offering for $935. He was assuring me that it was better to buy from them because I can get lifetime balance and rotating. I told him that I get that now from them.

I know its only a $100, but I could use that 100 for gas to break in my new tires :D

Has anyone run into problems having only four certs? Will they hassle you if they know you have five tires but only four certs? (Fith tire being sourced online)

Sears did not hassle me and I did exactly the same thing when I bought the BFG MT's from them. I bought 5 tires and came back within the 90 days and bought 4 certs. They didn't ask any questions and they warrantied 1 a couple of years later as well as did 5-tire rotations and balance and fixed a couple of flats for the time that I had the those tires.

The problem with Sears is they are really slow. If you want to leave your vehicle all afternoon they're fine, but if you're just waiting...

Totally agree on this one. I just replaced one tire couple of weeks ago for $40 ($25 cert + mounting bal). In the past, I got my money back from buying five certs many times over on previous tires. The cost of my tires are now much higher than when I purchased them so that's where the certs come in handy too.

Discount Tire sucks dicks; I'll never buy tires from them again. Three of the flats I've had in the past 3 or 4 years have been in the tread near the shoulder and Discount will NOT repair them. Two were on the Subaru, the one this week more than 1" away from the edge of the tread along the inside of the tire and they won't fix it. And since the treadwear is beyond yada yada I have to buy 4 new tires. Oh, but they'll pro-rate that one tire. What a fu**ing bargain. Both times it happened on the subaru that was the case. It also happened on my fj-60 with almost brand new 31s, but Pirelli had quit making that tire, so I could replace it with a different tire. Every time I took it to another tire shop and they fixed it without hassle.

When I needed new 33s for the troopy, I got a quote from Discount, took it to Big O and left happy. When the Sube needs tires before winter, I'm sure not going to Discount.
My $.02

Big O won't balance and rotate tires for free unless they're Big O's brand - at least that's what they told me over on Juan Tabo near the Discount Tire there. The manager said he would, then he quit or got transferred or something.

I have been looking at the BFG KM2's.. how do you like them? I am considering them for early next year, if they have the 285/75/16's by then at a reasonable price. I asked at discount, and they are available for $675 a piece special order, but anticipated more of the smaller sizes would be available soon as regular stock.

Sorry Slim, I haven't had a chance to visit the forum in a few days. I really like them. The only problem with that statement is that I started wheeling last year and these were my first set of MT's. I have since also purchased Pro Comp Xtreme MT's for our jeep and I probably would have gone with the KM2's but I was looking for 285/75/16's. I have 17's on the FJ and the tires were $204 each (Cert's were extra). I called every tire shop in town at the time and that was the best price I found. As far as ProComp vs KM2, I haven't noticed an advantage for either. I think the ProComps might be wearing a little faster but we've been driving the jeep more than the FJ so it's hard to tell.

You might make sure you were getting an apples to apples quote. For that price difference it sounds like one was quoting P rated tires and the other LT.

I actually called a Cooper distributor in town that told me that tire sells for $230

and he said no way can he come down in price because there isn't much mark-up for tires

A little bit of a teaser update (pictures of course!!):

255x85-16? Could you translate that to a non-metric size?

255x85-16:
255 mm wide =10"
85% of that = 8.5"
8.5"*2+16" 33"

33x10x16

Edit - commonly referred to as 33-1000R16 (assuming they're radials) or, literally, 33-1004R16

Rory,

Do a comp shot between mine and your tires side by side to give everyone the width difference.

Good looking tires.

On a different note...I see you added locking hubs like Ali. Do tell more.
