Tire review General Altimax Arctic 265/75 16 snow tire
As of today the lx is running snow tires. The 285 75 16 BFG TA KO D load range were not cutting it for slush use around here. So it was tire shopping time. I finally settled on the 265 75 16 123Q load E Altimax Arctic made by General tire. I know the tires are smaller, but there are few true snow tires in 285 75 16 at a reasonable price, even less with a d or e load rating. The four tires mounted and balance was $560 out the door. IMO $560 was reasonable for 4 mounted and balanced snow tires in that size.
My biggest complaint for the BFG's was slush and nud performance. They would pack up and never clear. When they packed up the cruiser was horrible to stop and turn. I am shocked we never smashed the truck with them... What I liked about the BFG was durablity and deep snow performance.
The new tires are quieter, perform outstanding in slush and deep snow, and have about the same ride stiffness as the BFG's. Durablity of this tire should be interesting. The tires took very little weight to balance out as compared to the BFG's.
I will measure the tires after the season is over. Before the new tires were mounted I flexed the side walls and compared them to the side walls of the BFG's. The New tires were softer but not by much, They were nothing like the stock LTX's that were on the sales floor.
The change from 285 to 265 is noticable on the highway. The lx just feels/is slower on the highway as expected. Acceleration is the same between the older tires and the new tires. I can not tell the differance between the BFG and the Altimax Artics in town. Turn in is the basicly the same and acceleration is the same too.
BTW, I have OME stock height springs, toyota landcruiser shocks and no armor.
