As far as the weak sidewalls, I was talking about the *BFG* AT's - should have been more clear. The tires currently on our '99 4Runner are those, and currently have over 100 kmiles on them as well. I've always bought Michelin, BFG (I'll have to report that to the Department of Redundancy Department) and Goodyears, so I know nothing about the Nittos, but others seem to be happy with them.

You guys have 100k miles on one set of tires? Wow!

Your approach to tire shopping is smart; buy tires for the 99.9% of use, not for the 0.1% use that they may get.

I'm shooting for at least 0.7% of the use.

I have easily ran my Bridgestone ATs to 60K+, and I think some have gone to 70K. Right now they are over 10 years old and Discount refuses to balance them anymore because they are so old.

Is it because they are old or because the tread is below "safe" limits and their lawyers say they can't touch them anymore?

So the guy is ordering from tirerack.com, and then charging you more for the tires? But its all good since he's a local?

He carries a full range of tires. If there is something that he doesn't carry, he'll order it from a place like tirerack. Our family has been getting tires from him for 20 years or so. So yes, I think it's all good since he's local. :D

It's just been my experience that it's worth a few extra bucks knowing the guy putting on your tires. And any time we've had problems (flats, holes, etc.) Kevin has gone out of his way to make things right.

Tread is legal. It's the actual age of the tire, which is cast on the sidewall.

I think any tires over four years old, they get weirded out

I can vouch for this. Cedar Crest Tire is awesome. I didn't buy my tires for the faux-lux from them, but they do pretty much everything we need. Fixed holes in tires, and dealt with the Power Wagon tires (which were all mounted on split rims) safely.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy tires at all from the guys at Cedar Crest Tire, even at a little markup.

I saw it at All-Mini salvage yard. The rims were gone. I got the spare rim/tire from underneath, two centercaps and two lug nuts. The truck was pretty much wasted with the driver side and roof scraped and crushed. The rear axle was still there but I don't know if it was in good enough condition to salvage. It was only being held to the truck by the trailing arms. The shocks and other associated parts were sheared off. I tried to see if it had the diff locker but couldn't get a good look at it. Pretty much every body panel was toast. The engine was there but didn't get a good look at it other than noticed the throttle body was not installed. There were most of the interior parts still.

Marc,

Is this place a reasonably priced yard? Will they let you walk in and look at things?

What colour interior? (...and yes, there is a reason I'm asking...)

What are you British now?

Or is this for cool factor?

It is "color" when we're talking about an 80.
It is "colour" when we're talking about a 100.

Do not listen to the colour blind parts jockey that scratches his nutz all day.

It also seems to pertain to certain parts geeks too. I was going to say something like "color" was the masculine form, and "colour" was the feminine form, but ...

  • 80's are for sissys and old men, and
  • 100's are for :princess:

So that doesn't work, in Dan's case.

Shouldn't you be doing something about that 45 year old FJ40 rusting in your garage instead of harassing me and Dan? :grinpimp:
