Hey guys, while replacing my valve cover gasket the other day I found that the plastic part of the guide has broken off and the timing chain is now riding on just the metal part of the guide. For reference sake, it is the long guide that pivots and the one the tensioner rides against. Toyota service manual say to remove the head to replace the chain, gears, guides, etc...
My question is, do I have to remove the head to replace the timing chain and other parts, or can I get by with just removing the front cover? Thanks for info!

Pans or head pick your poison

Look at it this way, if your truck is a 93 to 97, and your head gasket has never been replaced, I'd remove the head, this way you'll be able to do both jobs at once.

You may find it hard to remove the cover without it sticking to the head gasket if you drop the pan. Had it happen on a 22re and it ruined the head gasket I had already replaced once. Also if you plan to take the pan out completely you need to lift the engine and inch or two, since it's hard to clean the mating surface without removing it. Taking the sway bar off helps too
