So I finally pulled the trigger and had the timing belt replaced at 100K today. Services performed:

Timing Belt replaced
Accessory Drive Belt replaced (belt provided by me)
Oil and Filter Change (Mobile 1 Oil and Filter provided by me because it is much cheaper at Costco)
Vehicle Inspection

Total came to $413 after various discounts

They advised that the water pump, pulleys and cam seals are all fine with no fluid seeping out.

Fair price?

Great price.

For that price, I would have changed the remaining stuff as well :)

fair price?

No...

that would be an *amazingly low* price for my area....

good for you! :)

I had it done at Toyota of Knoxville. Good people.

for that price I'd drive there from Seattle - I'm looking at $600 as the cheapest ... and it goes to $1000+ at other places.. gawd!!!

I thought about that afterwards - I should have just replaced the water pump as well.

If you water pump was leaking, where was the coolant going if nobody could see the leak?

I would also like to hear from more people about their water pump issues. What happened when the pump failed? What was your mileage when it failed?

Not to ruin your great price, but my water pump was puking where you couldn't see it. Hope you don't regret not having them do it while the front end of the motor was open.

It had a bubbling leak, small enough that the coolant likely just evaporated from the engine heat. But enough that when we pulled the pump there was a little, crusty pink stalactite on it.

What mileage on your truck when you noticed / replaced it? Did your truck overheat?

I had timing belt and serpentine replaced at 118K at a cost of about $425.00. At 142K now with original water pump. no problems.

My wife had the belt and pump done at about 90K. Was about $1000-1200 at the local dealer IIRC.
Pump was leaking slightly so she had it replaced based on my advice.
Although, admittedly, I'm not too sure what would have happened if we had left it in. I can't imagine it could leak badly so suddenly that it would become a serious concern for the engine. Somebody know? But, anyway, opening up the whole thing again even 50K later just for the pump seemed like a unhappy proposition so we did it.

Dang, that truck is pampered...

I'm not sure that a small bit of dried coolant in the "weep hole" area of the pump is an indication of a problem. Why does the pump have a "weep hole" ?

The weep hole is used as a reactive indicator that the pump needs to be changed. Usually the bearing wears and some wobble is introduced which takes out the seal and leaks water via the weep hole.

It is "fair warning" kind of like the brake pad wear indicators.

Ultimately, a bad pump can drain all of the fluid in turn overheating and destroying the engine.

I paid $580.00 for timing, serpentine, and water pump. My guy also fixed a broken power antenna. If your ever in Big Sky country, Miles at Toyota Specialists is the man.

Sheesh - great deal! I paid a few hundred $ in parts alone. I would have gladly paid someone $300 or so to do that work.

I had to go back and look at my receipt but it cost me $935 for the timing belt, serpentine, water pump, upper and lower hoses, coolant refill, tune-up with valve adjust and new iridium plugs, + Mobil 1 oil change and complete lube. (at an indie shop in Santa Clarita, CA) That was two years ago though @95,000 miles. I recall my water pump looking good with no leaks on the outside but it was nearly shot on its innards.
