I recently had a close encounter ( a really (really) close encounter) on my motorcycle so....time to sell it. And I have always debated about putting alot of money into my Land Cruiser. Would it be worth lifting, armoring, and winching at 175k? I am afraid after putting alot of money into it that something serious will go wrong. Any thoughts/comments are appreciated, Thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with doing mods, the engine should go to ~300k, then rebuild and you could be good to 600k :D. Then again, if you can afford a newer, lower mile rig and the mods, then that is something to consider.

I say invest in maintenance first(ie HG, PHH, Starter, Knucles), mods are always 2nd fiddle. You can't go wrong with an 80 w/170k on it if properly maintain. I expect my 80 w/168k on it to last me a min. of 100k more.

Now with selling the bike I can get about 7k, sell truck get about 6k = 13k. Would spending the extra money be worth it though?

I don't really think so, I would rather have a 93 w/170k which has all maintenance up to par, and quality mods, than a lower mile, newer LC which will need most of the same maintenance and then not leave enough money to do all the mods.

Say investing that $$ into my LC now or buying one that is already up to par with 100k? Not matter, from now and on I must save to do the mods. The bike money will either go in the bank or to a new LC.

Keep the LC you have now unless you can get a big wad for your's and spend a smaller wad on the new one. The difference of 100k and 170k on a LC is marginal if all maintainance is the same, if the maintainance is bad on one, then the other is superior reguardless of the mileage.

Get everything up to par on your's and then throw mod money into it, don't waste money on a lower mileage 80 that wont be any better.

keep the bike, we all have really really close encounters.

wear a helmet and the right gear.

I just recently took the bike out and I realized that not only that it is pretty dangerous and with going away to school and not having a job it will be tough to afford the insurance and try to pay it off. But other that that I only ask this question because of on my dads 97 it just runs so much better/smoother that mine and it just drives me crazy.

one thing about most mods on the 80 is that they are easier to take off than to get and put on in the first place. I mean you may spend 4 hours putting springs on the first time, but taking them off and putting back the OEM ones will probably take you only an hour or 2. So, IOW, if you mod the existing one, and decide to go with a newer one later on, it'll be easy to transfer the mods. I'd stay with the known one and work on that one...

If you know the one you have is maintained properly, why gamble with something new and different that you can't trust. Not that buying any cruiser is really a gamble relatively speaking. A newer cruiser is going to need the same big maintenece stuff as the older one, just a little later on after you've really invested in it.

Make sure what you've got is going to be solid for 100k, then mod the hell out of it!

My 94 runs 95% as smooth as my 06. I think the biggest difference is the V8 vs. I6.

I expect my 94 to last nearly forever. I'm having to replace more odds and ends to keep it in 100% shape, but it still cost a lot less than a new one.

I would start with a fundamental question....

Why do you want to lift, armour, and winch your truck? Are you planning to get in to the hobby of rock crawling? .... joining a local 4x4 club? .... expedition wheeling? .... new found interest in camping in remote areas? .... impress the neighbors? ....

What say ye?

I say invest in what you already have. For me maintenance is #1, the mods are 2nd.

Depends on what you are gonna do with it. If for a daily driver, sell both and get a more plush one. Change the fluids and drive it. They are out there for $12k to 15k.
And, college Chic's dig the leatha...

I would like to go on expedidtions and join a 4x4 club, i'm just trying to find one that I like. But I have been thinking about this for a few weeks and with your guys input I think i'm leaning toward keeping the one that I have and modding it, Thanks.

It is a fun hobby but along with it comes the slippery slope as we have called it. You might consider finding a club you like and riding along with the guys for a couple of runs. Most people would be happy to have you along and you could see if it's something you want to pursue or not.

The costs rank right up there with Brent's Exclusive Country Club dues and golf fees as far as expenses. I heard from a reliable source that poor Brent had to sell the new Ping golf clubs and he got booted from the CC because the other members were hassling him about his modified truck. You may be called a Red Neck, a hick, a Texan, or worse.

If your rig doesn't run as smooth as a 97, you need a tuneup or O2 sensors or something along those lines. Plugs, Wires, Cap & Rotor first, then o2 sensors and clean throttle body and I'll guarantee you have a rig you can't hear idle with the hood closed. Also possibly have fuel injectors cleaned. Besides, you have the bus tranny:D , changing to a later rig is not an upgrade. Pile on boys...
