Just picked up my 95 FZJ80 from having a lot of work done on it at the dealer. It now has a ticking sound that I can't seem to localize other than coming from the engine bay. I don't remember hearing this before.

Work done around the engine bay:
Rear Main Seal replaced
Power Steering Pump replaced

Any thoughts? Could it be the power steering pump? I plan on crawling under tonight / tomorrow and make sure nothing is loose.

Thanks

Well nothing is loose that I can find. Definitely seems to be coming from around the lower part of the engine. Would the power steering pump make a ticking / mechanical noise? I would expect it to make more of a whirring sound if it was a bad unit.

Looking for ideas before I take it back tomorrow.

It is very hard to get the drive gear off of the power steering pump shaft on some of these. You have to swap the old gear to the new pump by using a puller to remove the gear. The puller can put a nic in the gear teeth. The nic or burr in the teeth makes a ticking nosie as it contacts the oil pump gear. Probaby is what happened. Don't ask me how I know:bang:

Hmm - that sounds like a good bet. Is there any potential for further damage from this?

I'm going to take it back tomorrow - after the $$$$$$ i dropped this week - it better be perfect.

Would reccomend to get it taken care of asap. That ticking noise is metal on metal gears that do not want to mesh properly. They will have to pull it back down and replace the gear with a new one.

Thanks for info. Trying to figure out a way to post an audio file for you guys to listen to. Nice cruiser by the way.

Don't know what a ticking pump gear sounds like and have never heard ticking like that from my engine.

Any danger in driving it back the 25 miles to the dealer?

I might call the shop that worked on it, tell them it's ticking loudly since it was serviced and that you're concerned about driving it back. Considering what you probably paid for all the repair work I'd probably put the ball in their court. The rig shouldn't have left the shop with that noise IMHO.

Presumably it wasn't ticking like that when it left the shop, because something is obviously wrong. I would call them and have them come get it. That way, they are responsible if something goes wrong.

Go to link and listen to Memo - coming from driver side wheel well.

That sounds very much like mine did when the p/s pump gear had a burr on it.
If the noise just started after the pump was replaced, I would bet that is what happened. I drove mine for several miles that way, but was planning on replacing the engine so wasn't to worried about it either. Would reccomend to have the shop send a wrecker just to be safe. I would not want to run the engine very long this way. I also don't understand how it could have left the repair facility this way either:hmm:.

Too late for a wrecker - but it's back at the shop and they are going to swap out the pump and gear for new ones.

Where is the pump gear getting it's power from ( ie the gear it mates up to) ? Hopefully no serious damage from driving it back. They called and said the pump gear didn't look warn - so hopefully it didn't cause any damage. But they are replacing both of them anyway.

I don't think any serious damage was done - the sounds actually gets better and almost went away at higher revs.

The power steering pump gear drives off the oil pump gear which drives off the crank gear. HTH:cheers:

Belt Idler pulley? Replaced mine, as it had a "sticky" spot and made some noise. Also did they replace the belts with all OEM ones? Sometimes the aftermarket ones make odd noises.

I changed the belts and the idler pulley not long ago when I has the supercharger installed. I don't think it's them - they weren't touched on this service.

New pump + New gear = sweet silence!

Old thread, but my 96 wound up being the gear also. It all ways made a noise like a lifter, rocker arm,ect.. since I bought it.Popped the pump out and sure enough, the gear had a small burr on it. New one from Toyota was $115. Sucks, but no noise now.

FWIW, this is a common mistake folks make when resealing the PS pump. The gear damage can be cleaned up with a grinder/Dremel. In this case I would certainly have the shop fix it.
