I would like an opinion or 10 on why I cannot seem to shift into first gear, unless I shift to first from reverse. I just upgraded the clutch hydraulics and the travel seems good and the clutch holds well when I do get into gear.

If your pilot bearing is not working optimally, it will spin the imput shaft at a faster than normal speed as soon as you engage the clutch. This effectively requires you to use reverse to 'stall' the momentum of the imput shaft, which is a common, but imperfect solution.

Is there a reason you did not post this question in general tech?
