No building yet. Just rebuilding.

Sold a 2008 JK because my wife hated it.

37's, Currie 60's, atlas...it was a pretty sweet rig. But its gone now.

Couple weeks later come home with a 97 land cruiser I paid cash for.

179,800 miles at purchase. Started overheating at 179,900 miles :)

that came out of the radiator.

Got to work today.

My help.

Everything out! Got the old rad out and back in today. Also changed the alternator idler pulley, AC idler pulley, water pump, and radiator hoses. Took about 4-5 hours probably and far less cursing than I expected.

A copper koyo rad. Allegedly. With all the fakes who knows what I got. I didn't get it from go-part.com though, and it does have "1917" on it somewhere.

Can you spot the parts that aren't 14 years old?

Radiator back in!

Get back to work at some time in the near future. Forgot to buy belts so that might slow me down. Replacing the heater hoses too. Also, gotta do something about cleaning the rest of the cooling system. It is filled with rust. Any ideas?

Nice work, I copied another members idea fro the FAQ. I used PVC couplings and removed the T-stat. I hooked the couplings in the upper and lower radiator hoses and ran the water hose to it to flush the system. You can then alternate the water hose to upper or lower hoses to back flush the system. I used cheap garden hose quick connect fitting on each end to facilitate removal and you can attach another hose to to let the water drain out to a bucket, ect. I also ran prestone 10 minute super flush. This one can be run longer since it only has 2-3% more SODIUM CITRATE. Compared to the standard radiator cleaner prestone makes.

Use your old hoses since you might need to take it to the store to see that PVC fittings fit.

Also if anyone reads this you can just replace the bearing in the A/C idler pulley. I ordered a couple sealed ones on e-bay for under 5 bucks. I cant find the P/N though.

no, no divorce, just make it luxuriously comfortable for the lady...

that coolant looks a bit milky.. check the oil too. I would investigate the HG as it may be subject to fail sometime soon.

I bet there are some good divorce attorneys here on mud that can assist you:lol:

Great Pooch. I figured with a handle like Boerboel there might be one lurking around your house.

Rig looks in good shape, just needs your TLC.
If it turns out anything like your JK, it will be a killer ride.
Just do what I did and buy it "for" the wife. This way, when you spend countless hours outside tinkering with it you are doing it for her!

Welcome to the addiction!

Doug

Killer jeep.

The Land Cruiser, its alright too.

Congrats and welcome.

I checked compression in all 6 cylinders and bought a HG kit and all were normal. I'll re-do the HG test kit once the rads on just to make sure. I also took it to a local FJ specialist type guy and paid him to look it over and his conclusion was also that HG was ok. We'll see though.

Thanks for the help guys! I already did the prestone flush and fill kit thing (no sodium citrate yet) and washed it till it ran clear with tap before removing old rad. I was horrified by the amount of crap still present (probably cause the radiator was a giant rust reservoir). I'll re-back flush it and do the Na citrate as well. Then I'll just re-check stuff in a couple thousand miles.

Next project after this is PS pump (leaking like a sieve). Then I need to learn how to work on these axles. Then I wanna do breaks. After that will probably tackle some of the electrical system. Then maybe I'll be ready to start looking at lifts and getting some meats and armor. This rig will likely be more of an adventure type rig than a rock crawler. Will try and incorporate some kind of internal system with room for the pup and kid in this one.

Is your fan clutch okay, or are you changing that too?

Appears to be working. Going to take it apart today and fill it with 20-30k cst fluid (its hot where I'm at, and I'm moving to AZ next month).

The JK was awesome and very capable, but it was not the most reliable rig (the factory t-case blew up while I was driving down the high way, for example, stranding me 5 hours from home after I'd been rim to rim to rim in the grand canyon...not a good was to end an already long day). I got the 80 looking for the opposite of that.

Good start with the maint. and base lining.

What are the plans? Stock DD? Extreme crawler?

My friends and I did the mojave road, last chance canyon, and some of death valley in the jeep a couple years ago and had a great time. Gonna overbuild for that type of stuff. Camping in remote places, driving roads that not many people drive....that kind of stuff. I'll daily drive it for a while too. I'm never going to have another extreme rock crawler that I try and daily drive. My next rock crawler will be a purpose built buggy.

Since you already have it torn down this far it may be a good time to replace your oil pump gasket and crankshaft seal.

These types of thoughts can make a project spiral. There are so many things "it would be a good time" to address. PS, starter, clean the oil cooler, etc, etc. In my mind, these are the general options:

1) Do nothing
2) Do Maintenance (fluids, filters, axles etc)
3) Do Maint +PM to prevent catastrophic failure
4) Do Everything

I think most people go with #2 when they buy a used 80. Some people, like the OP seems, go with #3. Very few go with #4 and end up spending thousands and months but end up with a mechanically new engine. The line between 3 and 4 are blurry.

The oil pump seal may leak, it may not. If it does it won't destroy your engine or leave you stranded. Spend an hour now to potentially save 3 hours at a later date. The decision is up to you.

Just curious, why did you go with a semi float rear diff in the Jeep?

When I bought the 60's nobody had a full float 60 rear for the JK (maybe 2-3 years ago). Now, dynatrac and solid have had one for a few months (maybe a year) and currie released their full float 60 for the JK about 2-3 months ago.

you will see now what a waste of cash was replacing axles in your JK .. suspension and 37" asap in your 80 .. it have factory lockers ?
