This sucks....loosing my altenator

Well guys....here comes the first big thing that I have to replace on SPEEDY the big free fj60. My altenator has been going out.

My charge gauge has slowly been dropping from the normal level and is now in the red. I have decided to park it until I can get it fixed.

Anyone have a spare laying around for cheap??

Can you replace the brushes? I just had the same problem here in Indonesia and I got new brushes and swapped them out and everything is good now. Very Easy and cheap.

I have never done anything to an altenator other than just replace it as a whole.

Maybe I can get it to the parts store and let them test it.

Check you grounds and connections first.

the connections on the battery are tight and clean. I have unplugged the airhorn that I plugged in this weekend thinking maybe there was a short across it but it didn't help.

I will check the main ground from the battery to the truck, tommorrow after I ride my bike to class and back(how fun, fat guy on a bike), although I'm not sure that is the problem.

Dan you had a parts 60 didn't you? You have an altenator on it?? If so how much? Don't worry about shipping you could just bring it along with you when you come through with my wheels. I think I will start driving the chop around town if I have to go somewhere that the bike can't get me.

In most cases the alternator be very easily rebuilt with a minimum of parts, parts that you can easily carry as spares.
I posted a "reference" thread a long time ago with part #s and descriptions.

I found out that the hard way that one of the altenators I used on my 60 build up was bad. I installed the other one and it was good.

I will search for Kevin Rowlands write up on the rebiuld parts.

That's a lifetime warranty with that orielly alt also. I have one.

Translations lifetime warranty= each time it goes bad they will get you anotherone but you have to install and deinstall. three times in 2 years so far.

If your driving a short distance during the day, and you have a smart battery charger, just charge the battery up overnight and you should be fine. Parking on a hill is also helpful to preserve the battery charge if your able to roll start. Obviously this isn't a long term solution, but it can get by for a while.

I have one of them Lifetime warranty Schmucks alternators. It cost a hell of a lot more than 60 bucks, but I am now on my 2nd in a year and a half.

When it goes out next year, I'm upgrading.

The OEM alternators are very reliable units, and quite easy to repair.

In most cases a full "rebuild" consist of 2 bearings, 2 brushes, and a voltage regulator. In most cases a bad alternator that starts to greatly vary its voltage is just a bad VR, an alternator that slowly loses power and then stops, has worn out brushes and a noisy alternator is just the bearings.

All off these things can be fixed with simple tools, and the VR can even be done on the truck, just a couple screws, an OEM VR is about $38, well worth just carrying one as a spare.

It saddens me to see so many Toyota quality alternators hit the scrap heap, when they could easily get another 100k miles of life with just a few simple parts.
I have literally been able to take Toyota alternators that have been sitting out in the elements for years, with spiders nests inside, so rusty that the bolts holding it together have to be cut off, clean the cobwebs out, slap on new bearings, solder in new brushes, screw on a new VR (find a few new bolts) and drive away.

well good news to everyone....and stupididty on my part.

I went to pick up my "new" altenator from autozone.....out of curiosity I had them check the old one......it passed 4 times in a row(kept testing it hoping to heat it up and possible expose a flaw).

So I went home and removed the air horn and fog lights I had installed on SPEEDY in the last 6 months and everything is working good now.

I must have had a bare part of one of the wires bleeding off my charge.
