This is terrible and obviously very cruel... but (and I know I will take flack for this) the Irish Wolfhound breeders have been merciless in putting down any animal that doesnt socialize well and any strain in the line that has this proclivity. They know that if a dog breed with this size and potential gets a reputation for injuring people that it will face the same adverse public reaction. To protect the breed they are prepared to go to these very extreme lengths. Other breed fanciers must look to this example or more of this type of BS that is occurring in Montreal will spread. When I see a guy promoting the aggressive instincts in dogs like Cane Corso's etc ...my immediate reaction is what a moron you must be and what a terrible disservice you are doing the animal and breed that you profess to admire.

The other bad part about this is that those that cannot keep their believed dogs due to the ban will either A) move out of the Quebec area, B) dump their dog somewhere (thus not being a beloved family member), or C) take them to one of the outlying area shelters, including going into the US to surrender them. This will then put a burden on the outlying areas to maintain these animals not to mention the emotional stress it will put on the animal possibly turning a good dog into an abused, neglected or aggressive dog.

It is a whole lot of fear mongering, like one article says, and the fact that it will likely not reduce bites in the numbers they are looking for will only add to the vaguity of the statute which will then turn to more animals being called "pit-bulls". Statistically, there are more bites by other breeds, normally small dogs like Jack Russells or Chihuahuas, than there are by pitbulls every year. The difference is that pit bulls have the strength, like their dobie, rottie and german brethren, to do major damage.

Plenty of cities in the US have demonstrated this type of stupidity. And as alluded to by AJP, a lot of irresponsible dog owners shoot themselves in the foot by facilitating the type of behaviors and public images that lend itself to this stupidity. I think Denver had a pit bull ban awhile back and they were going so far as to actually remove the dogs from people's yards and then go and put them down. As a pit bull owner and die-hard advocate I can tell you unequivocally that I literally consider my dog part of our family, and woe to the individual who would take it upon themselves to try and enter my property to physically remove and euthanize a member of my family. That's not going to end well for anyone. It's amazing to me how often the pseudo-data behind these actions has been disproven, yet each year some genius re-introduces the same tired arguments as some new revelation. With that said - all of us owners have a responsibility to not foster or encourage this irrationality by being jackholes.

Couldn't have said it better. The overall stupidity of people due to mass media portrayal is what is most disheartening. Even today I ran into this in my vet's office with an older couple and their dropkick Skiperkey (sp?). As the wife is paying for yet another visit on their "purebred" dog as well as paying for an extra dental cleaning due to issues with the 4yr old dogs teeth the husband sits on the bench with the dog. I had Louie, our 3mo Blue Nose Pit/Lab mix, there for his second round of shots and his excitedly wags his tail at everyone that is walking around including the old couple and their dog. They both hear me tell people what he is as a few had asked due to his coloring (he's the traditional silver of a Blue Nose). At one point he goes up to the husband who is holding the dog wagging his tail and wants to say Hi. Well the skipperkey starts instantly growling and snarling at him, mind you Louie now probably outweighs this thing by a good 10lbs, and even snaps at him. Instead of reprimanding their dog the husband looks at me and says "See... they aren't bad dogs, its all in how you raise them." Part of me wanted to say, Yeah asshat, I bet your dog does more damage to another dog/person in its life than he will ever do.
The wife then turns and says... well if he's a pit you never know, he's just a puppy now and doesn't know what he is.

Funny thing was that most of the vet techs, admin staff and even the vets have pit mixes. All that were there and overheard the conversation looked at me, rolled their eyes, and the receptionist I was working with reached over and scratched Louie and said "Like you would ever bite someone like the mean little dog." Luckily the old couple were too deaf to hear it.

With you guys - it's amazing the ignorance some people show based on a dog being a 'Oh, that looks like a pitbull!' Hysteria.

Mine was a Rottie / Staff Terrier mix (passed ~4 yrs ago) - he looked like a leggy Terrier with the 'diamond'/Terrier skull but perfect Rottie black / birch marking.

He was on a leash & went everwhere with me. Socialized to the 9's yet only other Terrier owners would know he was 'one of the bad dogs'.

My favorite was moms & kids in Home Depot who asked to pet or were in line near me - he was awesome & all parents were cool unless they asked the breed.

I'd tell them & they always said 'Really?' & I'd simply smile & say something like "Don't buy the stories in the news, fewer Terriers bite than people are felons" (true BTW).

The Boxer is obviously a Boxer & mine's got the ears & tail crops, so nobody asks breed but more frightening is the way some kids 'mob' at him - aside from proper ownership of dogs, I almost think approaching animals (dogs) should be a schoolroom taught thing - small kids who are in divorced / metropolitan houses without dogs are really missing major components of us who had all the dogs & guns around.

Both taught you maturity & being accountable, just my opinon.

People into BSL want rubber / bubblewrapped covered lives & gun bans, generally seems to fit the 'Social Justice Warrior' -stereotypes to a tee.

They prefer legislate & regulate to shouldering responsibility & showing common sense & practicality.

I'll quit being the curmudgeon now :cautious:
