Check the production date. Neighbor had a early 79 that had 4.10, and the small pattern steer knuckles

IIRC 2-79 was the change?

Old thread revival because I did search...

I just swapped my rear 3rd member on my 3/79 to 4.10. I already had a 4.10 up front(don't ask). Obviously, the flanges don't match. Is it better to swap the drive shaft flange or the pinion flange? I was going to snag the pinion flange off the old 3rd member (3.70), but it is fine spline and the 4.10 3rd is course spline. Which end is better to swap?

I prefer to swap the pinion flange, that way you don't have some "mutt" driveline out on the trails when you need parts.

What did you 4.10's come from? If they came from an earlier 3 spd rig, they have the smaller u-joint, so you can't just mate the yokes and running the complete end of the shaft will leave you with the small joint. In the end the pinion flange is often the least amount of work and cheapest (no driveline balancing needed).

I've got every different flange you could need, course, fine, no holes, round, etc :D

Kurt,

Thanks for the info. I may just call tomorrow, figure out what I need and place an order.
