thinking of trading up to an FJ Cruiser

x2 on the Tacoma. You can also get Armor all the way around and underneath and I'm not sure what advantage you would have with the FJCruiser, except maybe traction control and I'm not sure that's not an option on the new Tacomas - does anybody know?

New Tacomas has VSC (vehicle stability control) TRAC, and ATRAC. Pretty much the same as the FJCs I think.

I'm off to Baja on Tuesday morning Mike. I'll let you know how it was.

Most FJs have electronic locking rear diff and limited slip diff in the front, as well as the ATRAC stuff which Im guessing I would always turn off. I dont like active electronic traction control, dont like the vehicle doing something I didnt tell it to do :D.

Not really looking for a pickup. Im single-ish and no kids, and drive a hatchback, not terribly concerned about passenger/cargo space. Although my WRX has alot more room on the inside than you'd think. If I do trade, it will for sure be the FJ Cruiser as I really like them and have no practical need for any specific style of vehicle, besides gas mileage maybe but ehh :D. Still up in the air. Gonna try to test drive one on my days off. One stomp on the pedal may get me running back to my WRX.

There is not any limited-slip diff available for the clam shell front diff of the FJC, factory or otherwise. There is A-TRAC or you can put in an ARB air locker (my choice).

I like my FJC well enough; I use it mostly for a work truck. I've got 130,000 miles on it and it's been extremely reliable, except for the goofy ADD mechanism to connect the front half-shafts to the diff. It's very comfortable on the highway/long road trip, tons of cabin room for the driver and one passenger, and very capable wheeling too, even more so with a few mods. Tons of power, excellent 4-wheel disc brakes, good safety features and record.

The suicide rear doors are somewhat of a nuisance if you carry passengers in the back very often. The visibility is poor but you get used to it (have to use your outside mirrors on the road). It doesn't have the character or soul of a Land Cruiser but for a go-anywhere-at-any-speed-and-in-comfort, reliable, never-worry-about-it, low-maintenance vehicle it is great. I drive my Land Cruisers for fun, but my FJC when I have to absolutely positively get there and back on time no matter what.

I agree with Lee on his review of the FJC. However, I do like ATRAC for situations that bring tires off the ground but still have a need for steering agility. When it comes to traction and power, front and rear lockers are still king.
