I've often wondered if the 06-07 (vvt-i) isn't the Goldilocks of the Cruisers...
I'll take a leap to say it is!
Agree that so much of it is in the feel and it really was special. These hundies designed in the pinnacle of 90s had an air and loft to the driving that modern machines can't match. I can't describe it, but you touched on it with the low beltline, the honesty of controls, and a refined oiled feel from another era.
I test drove multiple 100-series and the VVTi made a larger difference than it would seem on paper. For around town and general travel, the later 4.7L VVTi drove effortlessly and mimicked the 5.7L well. Possibly smoother. The 5.7L stands out in high speed passing and when hauling really heavy loads.
An achilles heal of the 100-series in my mind is it's front torsion suspension. It's great and has some advantages. But it had limited travel even with modificaitons. The 80-series probably has the best possible front articulation with serious mods being a solid axle. The 200-series is pretty strong here too.
