Tonight on the way back from dinner I pulled the 40 over, slipped the transfer case into 4LO, kept the front hubs unlocked (2WD), put the transmission in the highest gear (3rd), and let the clutch out slowly without touching the throttle.

The truck started rolling and driving on the road...

...while going up an incline.

The old F engine just lugs on down to some ridiculously low RPM and gets the truck moving. Fantastic.

After swapping on a QuadraJet, I can lug my SBC equipped FJ40 down almost as good as the six. I've idled up hills in the area in 2nd and just off idle in 3rd gear (4-speed tranny).

Yup. That's what Landcruisers have always been known for: low end power. But like Brian said, a properly dialed in SBC can do the same thing. I can start on flat ground in 2H without touching the throttle and shift thru the gears all the way to 4th without a problem. My old 350 will pull a load down to below 400 rpm. John

It's a tractor

Well said. The long stroke six, coupled with the low gearing, gives these trucks amazing capabilities. I've pulled as low as 300 RPM's, it will go from 5 mph in 3rd gear up to 50. Toyotas are trucks, everyting else is just a car. And don't even get me started on low range...:flipoff2:

When I was a teen ager this always worried me. I lifeguarded at pools and the kids would play in my cruiser. I was always worried about leaving my keys in the fj40. You could turn the key with it in gear and it would start and drive away even if you were on a hill pointing up hill. It always amazed me I could start it with the touching the clutch while it was also in gear.

I have a 2B and it lugs away just fine- and I have started taking the keys out because my 4 your old girl is really into the idea of driving recently. I can just imagine the truck backing through the sliding doors int eh hose and just keeping on thru a wall or 2.

But I have to say that the gmc 305 v6 (not v8) that was in my 65 1/4 ton was the most low RPM pulling motor I have driven. 3 on the tree but it would have worked with only the 3rd gear. But man it DRANK gas!
