So what goes down first, the square gasket or the thermostat? the reason I ask is, when I had pulled the thermostat out to test, it was under the gasket... didn't seem right. Or maybe it is? Just want to make sure. Just got a new thermostat and gasket(s) top and bottom and ready to install.

I dont remember the gasket going over the thermostat on mine, i think the thermostat stuck down in a little recess and the gasket just sealed the housing.

There are 2 rubber gaskets.

1) Large one goes down 1st
2) Drop in the thermostat
3) Then place the small round gasket on top of thermostat

Yes, there should be 2 rubber gaskets.... and the small one goes on top of the thermostat.

If you don't have this top one it won't leak or anything... but you just won't have much warm air from your heater. W/o the top one, as the thermostat opens & closes the coolant recycles only through the raditor & remains too cool to provide 'hot' air for your heater. And the engine runs 'too' cool. If you have the top gasket, as the thermostat opens/closes the coolant goes thru the by pass hose, which provides much warmer air for the heater, At least that's the way I have been able to figure the water movement. But, it is for certain it came from the factory with the top rubber gasket. If it's still cool in the mornings where you live, you will be happier using both gaskets.

I thought he was just talking about the gasket that seals the housing which if the inner circle where the thermostat sits was too small then when you pull the thermostat out it would pull the gasket up. I think the innner circle of the lower gasket is made that way so you set the thermostat in the grove and the put on the lower gasket. Then like you are saying the other one on top of the thermostat.

This is from the parts microfiche:

I just changed my thermostat and it seemed logical to put the gasket in after the t-stat because of the groove in the lower housing. Mine doesn't leak.

i just did mine as well and I have had zero leaks to this point. 600 miles plus a weekend of wheelin at the LSLC roundup.
