The land of Elvis...
I just pulled what I am certain is the first of a bunch of bonehead moves. I tossed the shield for the front disk brakes. I thought they we something else and they are now gone forever.

Looked on specter. They want to pinch me for 300 bones for a new set. It is just stamped metal!

So, for all you experts out there; is the shield indispensable? Does it just collect brake dust? Would it be possible to reinstall the brakes without?

I am not trying to do this on the cheap. However, I really don't want to give specter ALL of my money either.

Thanks, Paul

I got a set from 1sttoyotaparts.com for about $200 and change for both a while back. They were for the 79+ 40s, but it worked. I had to get the new re-enforcement bracket cuz the one that were on mine were different.

I don't know if they can still get them, but that was a pretty reasonable price:meh: Mine were rusted thru

I believe it provides spacing for the outer hub seal. Without it the seal will not sit where it needs to be.

I have a set (dirty and greasy but appear to be solid). They are on sale, only $295. J/K PM if you want them we can work something out.

Perhaps install the Trailgear thicker wiper ring (called a rock ring?) and leave the dust shields off. Assuming you have disk brakes.

the trail gear "rock ring" is for the felt/rubber seals. trail-gear.com does however make spacers that allow you to delete the backing plates.

wow, it's hard to believe people would pay 200-300 bones for something most people throw away. I think I sold the last extra set I had for $25

I got rid of mine so they would not collect small rocks but you still need the spacer so your front axle fits together right. I can't remember who I got them from but check around and you can find them. The ones from trail-gear will work. I don't recommend putting the axle together without them because it will throw off the spacing for any of the seals that follow.

A lot of folks prefer to run without the DB backing plates. To do so you will need:

Trail-Gear Inc > Backing Plate Eliminator, or similar, and longer brake hoses to run directly from the axle to the calipers. Specs for the hoses i believe are in the FAQ.

Thanks Guys!

If I catch any of you out and about, I will use some of the 300 bones you saved me for a round (Grin)!

Cheers, Paul
