Got a little work done last night on my driver's front door. I had already pulled the door off, sanded, degreased and etched. I have a crack on the door underneath the bottom hinge that I still need to weld up and grind flat before I remount the door.

I tried POR Patch for the first time and have mixed feelings. It is easy to apply but takes FOREVER to dry, is not nearly as thick as I want for it to be (I was hoping for caulk consistency) and if you apply it too thick it doesn't dry well (the top of the patch hardens and rises above the bottom of the patch and air bubbles often form.) Since the POR Patch was so thin I had to put backing behind some of the holes to keep the POR Patch from flowing through. We will have to see what happens when I try to take the backing of duct tape off. If the POR Patch doesn't work for this application I'll weld these holes shut this weekend.

While I was waiting for the POR Patch to dry I threw a little paint on the door. Even though I was using Rustoleum rattle cans it looks pretty good for a trail Piggie. Once the glossy paint was on the door I saw a few areas that needed additional sanding so I started on those and hope to get everything finished up on this door tomorrow.

I'm taking Friday and Monday off from work to work on the Piggie and have my hopes up that I'll get the other three doors finished.

And here are some pics.

eventhough,

if you don't mind, let us know how the por patch works on that lower door corner pic you posted up. I would be very interested as I just ordered 2 tubes of it to do the exact same type of think to my 55 project. I have heard others have very good results with the stuff.

Well - I still have mixed feelings about POR Patch. If you are patching pin holes and nothing larger then I think it is a good option. If you are patching anything larger you need to cut out the rust and weld in new metal. For all the holes you saw on my door except for two small pinholes in the lower corner the POR Patch sucked. I had to grind off a bunch of the POR Patch and what was left was filled with air pockets....not good.

basically the PO had some bodywork/metal replacement done and i want to seal the pinholes in the welds as well as the seams where the patches were laid, that is what i am using it for mainly. Hopefully it will work, will update my thread later on. Thanks for the comments.

I got a little work in yesterday but 105 degree heat made the work slow. All four doors are off. All front hinges need to be replaced but the rear hinges should be OK for now. Both front doors were cracked pretty bad where the lower hinge mounts to the door. The passenger's door was by far the worst and was barely intact. I'm attempting to weld these back together. The metal is a little thin and burn-through is a problem but I hope it will hold enough for now. Sunday and Monday are Piggie work days and I hope to get the doors pretty well prepped for paint and hopefully have some paint applied along with lubing up the window so they roll up and down better.

I did fix the rear passenger door so it now locks. I had originally planned on reusing the current weather stripping but it really should be replaced. I am going to look up the "Piggie Weatherstripping Guide" thread and look at ordering the suggested weather stripping from JC Whitney. I belive there is an option from JC Whitney and SOR but from what I can recall most like the JC Whitney option better b/c the SOR option is too thick and makes the doors too tight.

None of the last three doors (excluding the driver's front door) need rust holes patched. I will wire wheel off any rust and treat with POR15. I do have to seal up four holes on the passenger's front door where van-style rear view mirrors were mounted by a PO. This will probably be done with welding since the POR Patch didn't work well on such a large area. It took about three or four applications to make the driver's door fair - it still is not as good as I want it but I am tired of messing with it and moved on to paint.

I'll post up some pics hopefully this weekend.

Steve; sounds like you are making tons of progress; it was 103 here in the shade today BUT the humidity was around 90% <grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr>by the wayhow is the hinge situation?

Lou

Got a few hours in today. I've almost finished painting the driver's door. I finished welding the old van-mirror holes shut on the passenger front door and welded up the bottom hinge cracks - I hope it holds.

I hope to take tomorrow off from work and get a little more progress made but we will see how that goes...

ETA: On the hinge situation - I am going to need all new hinges for the front doors. I think the hinges on the rear will have to do for the time being - its a trail truck after all.

I felt bad for not posting up any pics so I ran out and grabbed some.

Pic 1) Driver's front door. Note the green looks 'blotchy.' The same thing happened w/ my fenders. I hit them lightly w/ a green Scotchbrite pad and it then looks nice and even.
Pic 2) Holes in passenger's front door from PPPO's van-style mirrors. Welding these shut was 1000 times easier than using POR Patch on large holes.
Pic 3) Lower hinge mount on passenger front door. I didn't take a before pic but you can hopefully see where I made a bunch of welds in a figure 8. I hope these hold.

Well whadaya know I was able to take most of the day off. I only got about 5 hours in on the Piggie between the dogs, work and an insulation contractor coming by for a couple of hours to insulate the attic above the garage - its much cooler now.

I spent my time on the Piggie working on the doors. The driver's front door is painted and ready to be reassembled. All of the other three doors are stripped, sanded and prepped for application of POR. See da pic! I hope to slap some POR on these tomorrow afternoon and then start with the ODG/white paint later in the week.

Before I reattach the doors I am going to sand the A, B and C pillars and slather on some POR as best I can.

No new pics but a small update. I applied POR to the remaining three doors tonight. Time has been VERY short so I haven't been able to get much done. I hope to get some rattle can paint on the doors later this week.

Here is what I need to have done by Oct 27 (Pumpkin Pig Run).

Doors painted.
Doors reassembled.
Doors installed.
Front pinion seal replaced.
Mudrak speedo seal installed.
T-case output seal installed.
E-brake shoes and springs installed.
Rear quarters sanded and painted.
Rear bench reinstalled and I need a cover for it.

I would also like to get the tailgate rust cut out, replaced with new sheet, and paint the tailgate but I don't think that will happend in time.

We'll see if I get everything done on time. I am really thinking about taking a few days off after Labor Day to knock more of this out. Hopefully the weather will be a little nicer then also.

Steve, looking great:cheers:; BTW, have you solved the hinge situation?

Lou

Still working on the hinge situation. It looks like k9loco will be able to supply one set of front hinges off of her Piggie so I now need one more. BTW I didn't get by ULC this weekend. I'm not looking for perfect, new hinges - just something better than what I have right now which is cr@p.

ETA: This is what else I do in my free time http://www.forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=168583

You also help me weld on my piggy in your spare time :) and for that you get a slightly used (only 30 years old!) set of front door hinges as soon as I get them cleaned up for you.

PM me your addy and I'll put them in the mail to you ASAP. I'll try to media blast them and prime them tonight for you.

Hey, what about hooking me up with your old tail light cover? :grinpimp::grinpimp:

Steve, sounds like Heather has the front hinges covered:cheers:, do you need back ones?, also tail light covers..... what are you needing?; I have a couple of new/reproduction old ones "Two Tone" that I got a while back from <foxfab> for a pig I nearly bought:frown:

I still need one set of front hinges. What I need for the back of the Piggie are tag light covers - the crome covers that cover the tag lights on either side of the license plate. I need one more of those. Any leads?

have a set of tag lights Steve but they are pretty ragged; you are welcome to them; let me know and I can send your way; will check the hinges for ya......
