Hi, I am really thinking of buying a Diesel 70 series, but the problem people say in Saudi Arabia and here in Kuwait that the Diesel is very slow on the highway, it is very difficult to pass cars with it, and it has a very high price service including the parts price.

What made me think of buying a Diesel 70 series is the good fuel economy that is very encoriging in my opinion, specially the double tank 70 series (90 Ltrs + 90 Ltrs).

In the Gueness book of record, the highest driven car or truck is the HZJ79 with the 4.2 Diesel engine, as the book says it gave a 2090 kilo meters on I think 100 Klm speed. THAT IS FOR ME VERY EMPRESSIVE record.

On the other hand some one told me in Suadi Arabia that he tried the diesel and disliked it due to the low power. Others told me that in the Dunes the Petrol 240HP 4500EFI engine is the best, and the 4.2 will not match the performance of the 4500EFI.

Others also told that I will have problem with hard starts in cold weather, and that they had to use Petrol in a piece of spung to put it I think in the air intake in order to start it.

Also from my experience with the 4500EFI that under High Speed (160+ Kilometers) the Double tank will give about only 600 - 700 Kilometers, and thats very costly specially when you are traveling for long distants

So what are you suggestion on this subject.

As crushers said before if you want power then buy a petrol engine... theres no way you'll get better performance in a diesel engine that is made for different uses. as for the diesel they're great and reliable engines but seems like you care a lot about the highway speeds so if that is what you want then buy a petrol 4500EFI.

In my opinion I preffer the 4500EFI that is a great engine with lots of power and have the torque you need for everything plus is as you said before a very reliable engine. If you drive a lot in windy highways and you care a lot passing cars etc. I'll say that the 4.2 diesel will be a lot slower than the 4500EFI.

So I recomend buying a 4500EFI or as you said 4700EFI fitment into a 70 and you'll have more power and torque than what you need..

"FJ60_cruiser" thanks but I also want to think about chosing either Diesel and Petrol very carefully and which of the two is more important Fuel Economy or Power and Speed.

Thanks anyway:D

These things are absolute piles of junk. I drove one on friday at the local toyota dealership here (was a diesel), it's been in the yard since april and they haven't been able to move it.

The Aussie 4x4 forums are being very... unforgiving on these 76 series. But they are being compared to the new troopcarrier of course. We are fully expecting the new 200 series to be really "soft" compared to the 100 series because they've released the 76 series to do the mine transporation jobs and outback personnel movement thereby relegating the 100/200 series to "soccer mum" duties.

Time will tell :)

As for the power and speed thing.

If your'e driving a 70 series faster than 140kmh you're asking to die anyway. These things are BRICKS, they have NO aerodynamics and get -really- floaty above about 145kmh. Mine weighs close enough to THREE tonne (3000kg, 6600lb) and at 140kmh gets REALLY twitchy. Lighter trucks will have it happen earlier.

That said, my freshly rebuild 4.2 diesel (which is actually 4.37 L now) will sit smack on 140kmh without issue in 5th gear, but it is revving its nuts off. It uses BOATLOADS of fuel at that speed. If you fill the long range tanks you will use more fuel initially and as you drain out that extra 100kg of fuel you'll use less. Differences can be as much as 1.5L/100km for a full fuel load.

A turbo 4.2L diesel as in the 79 will have more than enough grunt to sit on 140 possibly even 150, but as I said you are going to kill yourself if you get a sudden crosswind. No cruiser into the wind will break about 140 unless it's a turbo petrol. Also, you can get a safari Dtronic chip for the 79 series (ex australia) to up the power/torque about 15-30% which should give those FZJ 4.5L owners a good fright :)

The 4.5 petrol will have more power for sure, but the 4.2 diesel has better compression braking on the other side of the dunes and twice the fuel economy. 180L of fuel will regularly yield about 1100-1400 KM depending on the conditions.

Can you give me the links to te aussie 4x4 and/or Toyota forums? I'd love to join them.

Great thread. This is true truck porn for us North Americans.

I've had my HZ73 up to 150km, it got up to speed pretty easy(for a deisel), seemed like there was still a little bit more power left, It got kinda scary when the front end started gettin light and shakey so I let off the throttle.
I won't do it again, and don't recomend anyone try it.

They are selling them here...

how's about you send me the money, I'll buy one

run it in around here in Oman for a while then drive it back to England via Africa

for you in two years time

I just went and asked the dealer after seeing a few around....I spoke to 4 "salesmen" before I found one that understood that Toyota do sell the new 70 series...

I even had to point out the one in the lot with the dealers name written on the side before he finally understood

Juggling petrol / diesel.....

yep in Venezuela you fill the tank for the price of 10 gallons of water and get change

Here too its cheap...but long run......I'll be taking it home...and some where along the line a turbo is a relatively easy bolt on

Ha ha! how about letting me know when you're due back in UK and I'll fly out and convoy back with you in a shiny cruiser?! I think I'd have to stick to diesel, but I suppose in Oman petrol is cheap.
Cheers,
Fred

wow! i can,t get off my eyes on that new Landcruiser...Only diplomats & international Group(Redcross) can have that here in our country.AAAWWWSOME!

In QATAR, they make a special fitment of the 4700EFI Petrol engine in the 70 series, particularly the 79 and 71, they fir the 100 series 4700 EFI in the official TOYOTA dealer as a dealer option, they are very fast, past 200km an hour(120 miles per hour). as said buy lc lover
If you ordered a fjz79 and ordered the 4700 efi what would the model change to uzj79 or some thing is this conversion a straight bolt in swap??
cheers

Fzj79( sorry im a lil sleepy)
