Not the lead that goes to the sender. It's basically the ground wire. The other side of the guage you could put 12v+ to it to test. Generally I just ground the sensor wire to test. And check the guage for 12v supply
 
Couldn't you use a decade box, someone here has to know what resistances correlate to what temperatures. Say 500 ohms for 185 degrees?
 
exactly , just ground the wire at the temp sender ( engine block sender) and watch it rise .Question ? if you ground the wire and hold it there to long will it fry the dash guage ? just curious

It could definetly. 5 seconds will not hurt you though. And thats all you need to ground look and disconnect.
