My respect to all that served and especially those serving now.
In 1965-66 a bunch of young men got drafted right out of high school and like me some chose an alternate branch than the army.
One kid I went to school with joined the air force and and became a para rescue.
He was a funny happy guy that everyone liked.
From what I know he got wounded a couple of times and got some metals.
He made it through his hitch and after getting out went to work in a steel mill.
Six months later he was killed in a work related accident.
Not an uncommon story but no less sad.

I see working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier didn't make the list, probably because we weren't getting shot at, but I did get hazardous duty pay because the rockets we were loading by hand could have been set off by the ship's radar, and because we were working within inches of spinning props and jet blast. The flight deck did however give us a great view of our destroyers and aircraft engaging in the coastal battles.
