Driving (75 FJ40 2F) home last night I noticed my temp gauge was pegged to the hot extreme hot side. Only drove it 2 miles so I know it’s not a thermostat issue. This morning, while cold, turned the key to start it and the temp gauge pegged to the hot side. Checked all wires and they appear to look good. No blown fuses. Can a temp sending sensor go out that quickly? Is there something else I should check before jumping to conclusions and ordering a sensor?

Try unplugging the wire at the sender from the gauge. At least in my July 74, the needle will drop if disconnected. If it doesn’t, there is most likely a short between that wire and ground.

If it drops the problem is the sender. An ohm meter will confirm this if the sender has very low resistance to ground.

Did you just change your sender?

I haven changed anything at this point. Thinking its the sending unit. When I disconnect the wire from the sensor the gauge drops to cold.
