I was crusing along highway 202 in arizona today and noticed my temp guage climb to the hot zone backed off the gas and dropped 10mph then it went back to middle temp guage and it didnt climb back up even with acceleration gained back with extra 10mph. it scared me for awhile what could be going wrong??? thermostat?

interesting rockdoc ha ha ha the 2nd post talks about the fuel guage and temp guage running off the same ground. I forgot to mention also when this happened the fuel guage shot past "F" when I know it was a quarter tank low...I got miracle gas :) thanks for that info.

so im assuming when the temp guage reads like it does that it means its not 'real' when its erractic?

If you follow the link Roc Doc posted and replace your voltage stabilizer as in the thread, problem will go away.

My crazy gauges went away just with the cleaning of the contacts on fuel gauge as shown in the referenced thread.

someone mentioned also cleaning the negatie terminal contacts to body and motor. Ill take apart the dash later today and clean with some electric cleaner spray stuff.

I remember the day I drove my just bought FJ62 home from L.A. Half way home I watched the temperature suddenly spike up to the redline, stay there for about a minute then drop quickly back down to the first notch(which is where it usually sits no matter what I'm doing). Talk about a heart attack! 5 Minutes later it did the same thing except this time I also noted at the same time the gas gauge also pegged high at the same time. After I got home and realized my problem was a "sensing" issue and not actually mechanical it didn't take long searching on Mud to find similar issues, and the excellent "fixes" noted . Let the "SEARCH" feature here on Mud be your guiding light in your Cruiser future! Chris.
