Several things can cause a P0420 code in a Toyota:

  1. Leaded fuel in an unleaded system will nearly always trigger this, given the differing properties of leaded fuel combustion and exhaust.
  2. Failed O2 sensors or connections are also possible culprits.
  3. A failed catalytic converter.
  4. Other less likely problems: an issue with the coolant temperature sensor, an exhaust manifold leak, a spark timing issue, leaking fuel injectors, misfires, or fuel oil contamination.

Ok I run on lpg so I think last one as I think it’s not current, I have a valve saver fitted that injects oil to protect valves from lpg high temperatures, it went wrong the othe day and pumped too much oil in , I produced a smoke screen.
