Hi all,

Wondering whether anyone has been able to get Techstream working with their HZJ105, or another pre-OBD2 100 series? I'm trying to access the ABS computer to perform a full brake system bleed, but I can't get the vehicle to talk to the computer.

I've got a Mini VCI cable and an adaptor to go from OBD2 to the old Toyota 22 pin diagnostics port. I've also downloaded and activated Techstream software version 12.20.024 and set my region to Other. Theoretically this should be compatible with any OBD1 or OBD2 Toyota vehicle, including the HZJ105.

Nothing happens in Techstream when I plug the vehicle in or switch the ignition on. When I try to select the car manually, the only relevant option I can find in the list is "HZJ", which then gives the four sub-options listed below. I have tried all of these and none of them seem to work. Appreciate any advice if you have been through this process yourself.

The system will recognize the vehicle once you hit "Connect to Vehicle".

I've connected mine to several different Land Cruiser 100/LX470 and that screen you posted, auto-populates with vehicle model, year and VIN.

Don't know much about the HZJ105, but would assume if the HZJ105 is in the system it should find it automatically.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I had expected it to recognise the vehicle automatically, but I'm not having much luck. Being an Australian model it is MOBD protocol (not OBD2 compliant) and it also has no engine ECU, because the 1HZ is a mechanically injected diesel.

Oh! This is like the old Range Rovers Classic I used to own... There's a special device for them.

A couple more screenshots to show the error message I'm getting, plus the result of the cable utility check:

Strays a bit from your actual question but the following seemed worth a mention ....

Several years ago, I had endless trouble and ultimate failure making Techstream work on my 2006 HDJ100 (with 1HD-FTE turbodiesel, also confirmed with MOBD, along with all Toyota diesels in Land Cruisers in Australia before 2007).

I need to try a bit harder with Techstream as I am not sure whether my problem really was lack of connectivity due to MOBD, or, actually was my ineptitude or impatience.

Anyway, I was directed to this dongle:

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/belive...-elm-327-obdii-code-diagnostic-tools-lxm1749/

and this app:

ELMScan Toyota - Apps on Google Play - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.obd2.elmscantoyota

Both worked fine for my purposes – although I only use them to access the ECU for for Active Height Control (AHC) to help in resolving issues in that system. Other dongles and other apps did not work for me.

I have not used these arrangements for ABS or other ECU’s and systems on the vehicle and cannot I vouch for their further applicability from personal experience – and at the moment the vehicle is in Perth for family reasons and I am in Brisbane, so it is difficult to do a check.

Anyway, given your difficulties, the above might be relevant.

I should say that if you can get answers that help you to get Techstream to work, that would be best. It is far more useful than the alternative dongles.

It looks like there is now a newer version of the Kogan-sourced dongle but I have not used this:

Alternatively, you may also want to have a talk to the folks at the Perth-based outfit at the links below. They seem to know their stuff and may be helpful, MOBD and all …..

You searched for elm327 – OBD2 Australia - https://obd2australia.com.au/?s=elm327

You searched for mobd – OBD2 Australia - https://obd2australia.com.au/?s=mobd

I have tagged @Formulaonehd in the Pilbara in case he can add any wisdom.

OK, I think I might have an answer, and it's not looking positive... My HZJ105 does not have an OBD2-type DLC3 plug under the dashboard, only the 22 pin DLC1 connector in the engine bay. From what I've read, Toyota added the DLC3 plug to the HZJ105 around 2002/2003 when they fitted an EGR valve.

It appears that Techstream 2.0 is not compatible with DLC1 and DLC2 vehicles (see below). Even though I have the right cables to plug in, the car will not talk to Techstream 2.0 because it is not compatible. The only tools that will work are Techstream 1.0 and the old Toyota Mastertech scantool.

I don't think Techstream 1.0 is a downloadable program, and I'm not sure if it has the same functionality as 2.0 (e.g. brake bleeding utility), so it looks like I'm out of luck.
