Hi!

I have a Prado series 90 from 2001. I've seen that the engine in this one (this is the turbo diesel 120kw) have the same specs as the 122kw and the current 127kw diesel engine from the 120-series.

Now! What parts or specs are different between the engines? I would like, if possible, to change the parts that differs to parts from a 127kw engine. Why? To get the extra tourque and still keep reliability!

There's quite big difference in tourqe - 343nm in mine and 410nm in the newer ones...

Thanks!

I believe its in the programing of the onboard computer. Easiest/cheapest way to increase the power is to buy an aftermarket performance chip.See aussie ebay
Im not 100% sure why they do it,I guess emissions is part of the reason.
It may also be something to with what the dealers want,less power,less warranty claims
The performance difference in the V8 diesel is even lager

But if it's only the software, a 127kw ECU would give more tourqe then aftermarket performance chip? It could even be cheaper...

I havent really looked into it as I dont own a Prado,but I thought the aftermarket chips offered close to 140 KW.
Some of them advertise 25% more HP.
What does another ECU cost?

Hmm, if I change the ECU and then put in performance chip, I obtain the most tourqe increase - from 343nm to 510nm! (and 204ps)

Again ,no personal experience,but I would imagine a performance chip would overide all the ECUs and give you the max HP/Torque regardless.
When the sellers of these chips offer "up to 25% more power",it is probably for the engine with the lowest HP.
Just a guess though.

EDIT Lets back up a little.You have a 90 series with a 1KZ T. The 120 series has the 1KD FTV and has a different fuel injection sytem and is also direct injected.

It's worth asking the question. I think europe got the 1KD a long time before NZ and Aus did.

Are you running the 1KD or the 1KZ?

How can I tell? For me, only one engine have 120kw and 343nm standard, and it's a D4-D commonrail engine that seems to have the exact same specs as the later D4-D engines...

2001 is the first year with the commonral diesel here in europe, as far as I know!

Regarding chip, take a look at Toyota Technical Europe.

Standard -> After TTE chip
343nm -> 405nm (163ps -> 204ps)
410nm -> 470nm (166ps -> 204ps)
410nm -> 510nm (177ps -> 204ps)

Since there is a great gap between tourqe between the 163ps engine (the one I got) and the 166ps engine, it would be great to achieve at leaste 450nm in my engine.

I hope I can help others thinking of the same thing here in europe by discussing this!

The D4D 3.0 engine is the 1KD.
The earlier engine was the 1KZ which can't handle as much boost so won't develop as much power.

In New Zealand we didn't get the D4D until around 2006. This was the 180 series prado. All earlier models (95, 125 etc) were 1KZ.

hello every body, i need an 1kd engine+ automatic gear box, same like jema`s pic

Its a tech forum ,we don't sell engines here ,we fix em. Try the classifieds at the top of the page.

Hi Chaps!

Did anyone solve the mysterie? Differences between 120, 122, 127kW D4D (1kd) engines?

OP had the 120kW D4D (1KD-FTV) in the first post btw, not the 1kz-te.

Some countries specify the KW output by turning up the fuel etc. The v8 D4D diesel also comes in 3-4 power configuratios
