I'm moving to Okinawa, Japan in July this year for the Navy. My sponsor who is leaving has a 1991 LJ78 that will be for sale when I arrive. He says it will need new shocks and tires.

This will be used mostly for my DD in Okinawa but I also plan to explore some of the backroads etc with the family.

I believe it has a stock suspsension. What size tires will fit and where can I get shock for a standard OEM suspension?

Any big worries or problems to look out for? Has 216K and has had the timing belt replaced at least once. No major issues that the current owner know of and I've known him for a few years before this.

I'm searching an reading the threads here in the 70's tech but usually hang out in the 80's tech.

Thanks!

They are great but the engine has disillusioned a few with its blown head gaskets or cracked heads.
Do the timing belt again, its a 100K klm job.

I imagine it would be fairly easy to find a shock at the dealer as they were sold there;)
You could also try Japan4x4 in the members section.

For tyres ,31x10.5x15 would fit easily but you can get 33s in there with a mild lift. 8o series springs will but they would need to be softened up for the lower weight.

C'mon guys, help me out. Where can I get shocks for this thing in the US?

Sent you an email.

Here is a link to get Pro Comp shock numbers for the Parado.

My preference is aftermarket. If you wanna buy OEM I will introduce to a local parts store.

Possibly problems / repair

Cooling system . change rad heater hoses, water pump, thermostat possible rad rebuild

Timing belt & belt tensioner
cam seals crank seal

REPLACE head gasket or risk head crack

I can meet your sponsor and take a look a the truck if you would like me to.
