I have read many positive reviews of George's TaskLED lights installed in 60-series, 80-series, and FJC's but upon searching didn't find any info on installing these in a 40-series. Looking at George's web site: White LED lighting and popping off the plastic cover of the "dome" light on the driver's side of my 1980 hard top, it looked like the new V2.0 Rebel Dome Module would easily fit. The stock light takes a 1-1/4" festoon incandescent light bulb, and there is at least 1.5" x 1.5" of space under the plastic "dome". So I ordered one via email; got a very fast response from George himself, paid $35.32 shipped for one module, and had it in the mail two days later. The thing is tiny! A single 90-lumen Rebel LED on a teensy circuit board with a "custom driver" on the back that among other black magic insures that it only takes 350 mA to deliver the 90 Lumens of light.
I found the module length including the contact tabs to be a little less than 1.25" long, but it was simple and easy to bend the springy contacts in the stock dome light in a little so as to hold the LED module firmly. be certain to switch the dome light off before installing the LED module - George says installing it in a powered receptacle can short the module. Photos of the module installed (one with flash and one without):
Note that the LED module has polarity; in this application the "+VE" terminal is on the top side and the "-VE" terminal is on the bottom. If reversed, no damage will occur but the LED will not light.
My crappy point-and-shoot camera cannot do justice to the brightness of the new LED, but it was painful to look straight at it when I first turned it on!
It is much brighter and much more white than the old incandescent festoon bulb. sadly the photos do not reflect this.
A vast improvement over stock, and uses such a miniscule amount of current that you could probably leave the light on for a week at a time without draining your battery. Worth the money to me, for a miniature work of craftsmanship that gives nearly as much light (with less power consumption) as the much larger Chinese LED arrays that I put in my FJC dome lights. A thirty-second, 1/4 banana job.
