It appears to be coming from the timing cover on the passenger side. Does anyone recognize this? It starts happening as the engine begins to warm up and it does fluctuate with rpm. I had the water pump replaced about a year ago after it sprung a leak, overheated and blew the radiator. But I shut it down immediately and saved the engine - no problems since the repair. I do not know if they changed the timing belt while they were in there. I’ll get it to the shop next week but wondered if I might get some insight before then. Thanks for any help! I have a video of it on my phone, with sound, but I don’t have any idea how to attach that here.

Exhaust tick. Very common and heard mostly and loudest, during cold start-up. This can be a loose spark plug walking out. Which is often mistake, for the very common, cracked exhaust manifold tick.

Most common other than above two, and easiest to test. Fuel injectors tap. Use tech stream to increase and decrease fuel trim. If fuel injector(s) tick, sound will clearly change.

Not so easy is valve(s) tapping, in need of adjustment.

Piston slap or rod knock. Again hard to decipher, until once heard.

Thank you for the reply. Just to follow up - I put a stethoscope on there and found nothing from the timing cover at all. I then put it on the power steering pump and on the banjo bolt for the lines and both locations were definitely doing the tapping or knocking sound. Plenty of fluid in the reservoir and no whining from the pump. Any thoughts on that? Doesn’t happen at cold start, only after idling for a few minutes.

Put your ear in FR fender-well, on cold start up. Make sure no tick.

A bad vane pump (PS pump) will almost always leak if bad. Have you checked the idler and tensioner pulleys.

Definitely check your spark plugs! I thought I had an exhaust manifold leak for months before I changed the spark plugs and realized one had partially backed out. No more tick. It’s also the easiest possible fix.
